Just assembled a new A1. Turned it on, let it calibrate and heard a horrible grinding noise and the printer indicated that the z-motor short-circuted. Is that a feature of the A1?

Nope, create a support ticket.
Be aware, due to the sale, they will take far longer to respond than the normal painstaking delays that normally occur.

It might be worth you checking to see if the black plastic brackets are still screwed in to the vertical arms. These need to be unscrewed and removed (and it doesn’t say so in the instructions)

This! That happened to me initially. There really need to start tossing a addendum in there to notify people of the need to remove those before turning it on.
