Activated Carbon vs. Scorch

(I couldn’t find a more suitable section of the forum to ask this question, so I’ll put it here in P1S (after all, I need this for my P1S :slight_smile: ). I apologize if this is completely wrong…)

OK, I am slowly running out of my supply of Nevermore activated carbon and am looking for a place to buy some more (my supplier does not currently have any). Ideally somewhere in Europe and ideally from a reliable source (No-acid).

So I searched and found that, in addition to Carbon, there is also something called “Scorch,” which I am hearing about for the first time. According to what I have read, it is supposed to be even better than Carbon, but to be honest, I’m not so sure… I’ve seen enough “nice words” on e-shops :slight_smile:

So I would like to ask if anyone has personal experience with it? Can it replace Active Carbon? Is it better, worse, different? Could/should it be used on its own, or is it better to mix it with Carbon? Anything to watch out for? Any personal experience and opinion is appreciated… thanks !

Activated carbon looses its effectiveness when the air gets too warm. If you go over 50 °C or even over 60, you’ll notice that it filters increasingly worse.

Scorch is better at filtering VOCs at those temperatures. The official recommendations are to mix it with activated carbon according to you chamber temperature. At 50 °C they recommend 1:1, up to 100 % Scorch at > 65 °C.

That’s good to know (you learn something new every day :slight_smile: ). Thanks for the information. Am I right in assuming that the shelf life is not significantly limited? Because I found a combo offer (both products together, which would be ideal), but quite a large quantity … I think 2L each… which should last me a very, very long time :slight_smile:

To be honest, I don’t really know what the shelf life of activated carbon and Scorch are. I assume (and it’s really only an assumption, not knowing), that as long as you store them dark and air tight, they’ll stay fine for a long while.

OK, I thought so too. If two of us think so, then it must be almost true :-)))

What is Scorch even made of.
I see scorch, I think burnt and at a minumum sounds like a marketing name.
Might be great but it is hard to know with a marketing name

Unless you are printing at high chamber temps and with some filaments that produce nasty VOCs (ABS and ASA for example) it’s probably not worth using.

I’m running some carbon only in an external Ikea air purifier and a blend of carbon and scorch in the additional filter in my H2D. It does seem to keep the ASA odour down and I suspect I need to change it as my last ASA print was producing some odour. I’ve got no corrosion present in the printer despite the concerns in some threads about zeolite being highly corrosive, its had scorch/carbon for around 5 months now and 1500 hours of print time.

Bought the larger bags and I don’t see shelf life being an issue with it, they have been resealed after use so will only ‘clean’ the very limited amount of air in the bag.

The H2D thread has a lot of info on air quality etc that is applicable to all printing but ultimately ventilation (air change) is by far and away the best solution. Air quality, VOCs and how FDM 3D printing impacts that is a very deep rabbit hole!

Although I am actually a beginner (or at least I still think so), I am trying more and more to print from materials such as ASA, PC, Nylon… so a few days a week it gets pretty “hot” here, in my P1S. Finally, I decided to give it a try as I found a seller offering a 50/50 mix of Scorch and Carbon close to me (fair postage) and, moreover, labeled Nevermore, so it should be safe (from a printer/acid perspective) as far as I understand it.

So I decided to give it a try. BTW, I had no idea that Carbon loses its effectiveness at higher temperatures … it’s good to ask questions and learn new things :slight_smile: Thanks to everyone for their very useful comments :+1:

Scorch is more useful for the resin printer community as chamber/vat temps tend to be a lot higher and resin is really nasty stuff.
Nevermore have built a brand reputation around being suitable for use in the 3D printing World so there a justly deserved reputation that there products won’t turn all the metal parts of your printer into brown powder.

I’d still advise that ventilation is the best defence, either extraction or getting some air moving through the space your printer is in is remarkably effective.

I swapped the original filter for a bigger one filled with plain activated carbon pellets, and it made a huge difference in smell—prints are way more tolerable now.
