My new H2S/AMS 2 Pro combo arrived two days ago and it’s up and running (I also have a two year old P1S). At the moment I only have filament in slots 2 and 3, with 1 and 4 being empty. My question is: what would happen if I put spools in the empty slots and inserted the filament ends into the filament feeder? Would it feed and read? Would it do nothing at all? I’m in the middle of a 7 hour print and wanted to pre-load the filament colors for the next model I want to print. There’s no pressing need to do it now, I’m just curious as to what would happen if I did.
While printing the AMS feeder will grab the filament but it won’t read the spool.
Thanks for the reply, I assume that once the print is finished the AMS will read the RFID tag. I just wanted to make sure I didn’t screw up the print in progress.
That’s correct. If a print is running when you put in a spool and start the filament, it just waits until the print finishes to read the filament and calculate how full the spool is.
It’s that testing how full the spool is that keeps it from sorting out the filament during a print. It needs to push enough filament to rotate the spool enough to see the RFID tag twice. That and the odometer tells it the circumference of the filament on the spool. If filament is being fed for a print, the filament path for testing that is blocked.
Afaik it’s not reading the spools directly after its finished, but you might need to hit the re-read button for that spool to trigger the reading process.
I wanted to thank you all for your very useful information, It’s a good day when you learn something new.
