Something really grinding my gears is the “Hey I use GenAI; come look at my rubbish” or “I can make this with GenAI” I often get in my model comments. It’s only on this freaking platform too; of the six platforms I use, this is the only one I see GenAI slop all over, and being actively promoted on by users.
I think BambuLab have themselves to blame for this; they actively promote the use of GenAI by “rewarding” the use of their “labs” (just look in the points/missions in the wallet).
With how much GenAI as a whole is burning money (and the planet) the second it becomes too costly to BambuLab to maintain their “labs”, and its users to pay to use the “tool”, GenAI will fade away from MakerWorld, but when that will be? Who knows, but it can’t come soon enough imo.
GenAI won’t go away from MakerWorld since BambuLabs are marketing themselves to VC not as a “3d printer company” but as “AI company”.
It’s not just MakerWorld. Following China’s lead, America’s B.O.I. recently signed the Advancing Artificial Intelligence Education for American Youth executive order. The world’s two biggest economies are committed to teaching their children how to use AI. How long before the rest of the world follows suit?
Do you think it is possible for the AI models to win the 3D Benchy contest? I have been working on a model for the contest and I would hate for the awards to go to AI entries.
Another account full of image-to-3D models, this guy is earning enogh points to get a free printer.

Do you want to be stealed @Bambulab?
It’s only 22 boosts and 719 downloads (at the moment), there is still a long way to go for a free printer
Just checked and creator claims he creates models in blender. I don’t know what the truth is, but as @RetroSharky wrote, when you redeem a giftcard, they usually check your profile to see if you are doing anything “illegal”.
There are accounts earning thousands of dollars with AI, and you wouldn’t even know it. Whenever you want, we can play a game of guessing how many of the top 50 designers with the most downloads use AI without you noticing.
#facts This is just cold hard #facts
Remarkable that this is happening so quickly as AI develops.
I am not against AI; I don’t see it as a problem. I think that, as you say, the important thing is the rules of the web repository.
However, I believe that people’s general dissatisfaction with AI stems from the lack of clarity conveyed by Bambu Lab. They do not prohibit AI, nor do they fully accept it openly, and on the other hand, they themselves have several AI generation engines.
Clear rules are the only thing the community really needs.
Here are my suggestions to @MakerWorld
- Require AI generated models to be marked as AI generated
- Limit or eliminate the reward incentive for uploading AI generated models
- Ban AI generated models from contests
- Give users the ability to hide AI generated models in search
As for point number 1, I would suggest adding a checkbox option to the upload process for uploaders to identify how their models were made.
For point number 2, I would support the decision to completely eliminate any reward incentive for posting AI models. When you reward low effort activity that anyone can do, you will find that many more people will do it. So you’ll either have to increase the amount of money you pump into the system (MakerWorld rewards), or redistribute the current amount, which will take away from people who are designing models themselves.
For point number 3, if you want talented and skilled designers to enter contests, don’t make it possible for AI generated models to compete. I don’t know if judges have ever picked an AI model, or ever would, but making it a rule would send a very positive message to the designers on this platform.
For point number 4, consider how many users would want to filter out AI generated models, because they don’t want to print them. They may not be able to tell, or want to spend the time determining if something was AI generated. Implementing points 1 and 2 would make this less important, but I would still want to hide AI generated models.
These points are practically impossible to implement, given that any company wants to reduce its expenses, and having employees monitor and approve models is a very costly endeavor.
- AI-generated models are no longer identifiable to the untrained eye. Even someone who can distinguish meshes generated by programs such as Blender or Nomad Sculp would have to review each model one by one to identify the typical flaws of AI, and even then, it would be difficult to get it right.
2 and 3. Same as point 1, they can no longer be differentiated.
- This would only hide models that the designer voluntarily marked as AI-generated, which is not going to happen, because people want profits, basically.
And then you say that “people don’t want to print AI models”, but this is not true. The proof is that AI models have thousands of downloads every day. People don’t want to know that they were created with AI, which is different. The user thinks, “What a beautiful model, so useful, so functional, so funny, etc., etc.” And they print it, no more, no less. As I said, most people are not able to distinguish an AI model at the current level, and this will only get worse. In a few years, any model, no matter how complex, will have AI intervention in its process, if not totally, then partially.
And it’s not just a matter of 3D models; thumnails are made with AI, concepts, brainstorming, improving real photos, or changing the backgrounds of real 3D-printed pieces. AI is here to stay, and it’s a race to see who adapts first.
Makerworld already has rules they can’t enforce on their own. They rely on users filing reports and users providing evidence to back their claims.
Maybe it was already mentioned butwe can start clearing our feed now See AI slop? Dislike the designer and it his or her work won’t show for you anymore!
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU @MakerWorld @Tanklet
Ah ha. Thats useful to know! They should probably add a “AI generated” filter that other sites use. Although that depends on the uploader being honest!
True, but hey! It is a start
How long until someone makes a Chrome extension to sync these so if more than 10 people mark it as hidden it’s hidden for all other extension users
BRB spinning up 10 instances of the extension so i can just blanket block all the good creators
Now you know why this isn’t going to happen
Yes, it would need some sort of anti-spam. Perhaps you need to connect a phone number of some sort, idk. I personally don’t want to deal with it, but someone might.
I came here to ask about which AI STL sites are the best, but now I feel bad. Your points are good. However, I design my stuff in Fusion 360 from scratch, or I purchase commercial licenses. I can’t do organic things like rocks, plants, animals. I was hoping to use AI to generate some components (like boulders) that I would use as part of my design.
It really sucks that people are generating the entire model and posting it like it’s an accomplishment. BOOOOO! That really puts a damper on Makerworld.
