I don’t even try STL AI generators because of how scarily bad the reviews are. One got less than a star average.
The point was… it won’t be long until this is much easier and effective. IMO, the current improvement in photo generation is a big hint of how the modeling will come along.
I know this is kind of random but I realized a great analogy: the history of the bagel industry. FIrst, it was only humans making bagels, similar to only CAD models, no AI. Then machines came along producing cheaper lower quality bagels, yet everybody bought them, just like the lower quality AI models. So the bagel workers (model creators) were forced into the shadows. This is exactly what’s happening on Makerworld, the AI models are ousting all CAD models. Unfortunately, at this rate, CAD models may never make a comeback.
There will always be a place where true creators can meet virtually and share their thoughts. Makerworld is not the last nor it will be. Makerworld is, at the moment, the most known because of the easy print method shipped with their printers and obligatory website registration so you can use your own machine.
Take the rewards out of the equation and you will see those “creators” flooding the competition websites and quitting makerworld without even blinking
i just noticed on these users they did not even print the object, they are using the render trick where you can make the object render as 3d printed and they even made the layers look bad so no one get suspicious about it, look carefully at bydovie and mrpurple
Yep, several people already mentioned that and i even commented on one of bobo’s model, the one that is a pumpkin, because users wanted to know which filament he used and he said “Dual color pla” and that was it… so i gave them a nice explanation on how dual color works in filament terms
man you know this topic is important (AI flooding) when you see 67 comments in less than 24 hours XD i really hope to see some action from @MakerWorld moderators to fix this issue and not on the expense of our freedom / earning.
A the beat goes on…
And now you can buy “a bagel” for $0.10 at the grocery store and it sucks, or you can go to that one bagel place, pay $5.90 for “plain bagel” and eat the best bagel you’ve had in your entire life…
Anyway… The more I learn how much goes into creating attractive 3d model, just imagine how many steps are skipped by “ai gen” posters:
- Coming up with an idea - this one is big. Even for “simple model” one has to be creative enough to come up with it!
- Actually modeling the idea and prototyping it and refining the model based on testing
- Doing decent photo of the printed out model
Everything just comes “packed”.
And even then, to post ai gen image that seved as an “inspiration” for the model that’s “meh” is such a weak move. Couldn’t even own up to making the photo…
I’m in a bad mood so I’m gonna say it straight: a “beginner” that manages to design something as simple as cube with a hole in it, print it, take photo of it in bad lighting with old phone and then honestly post their 1st model they’re very proud of - is a better designer, better artist and better person than all those AI gen uploaders combined.
“People will try to put the same limitations on you that they put on themselves.”
People in general will look for the easiest way to do things, AI in this case works for most as it saves them countless months bouncing around trying to figure out a 3d sculpting program to produce a 10c trinket. They will tolerate carpy print quality and cherish it the same as a 5yo’s sketch of mom because they “made” it.
I don’t deny this is the direction MW is headed, the thing that annoys me most about this is it’s lowering the standards by allowing any garbage to be uploaded as long as those sweet downloads happen. I’m noticing the lazier “designers” typically blame bad filament or supports for user failures yet they themselves post literal minatures in white or black low contrast image to prove it is printable (if they even go that far).
The problem is that BBL rewards users for uploading models, and they gave users a model generator to automatically make AI models.
You shouldn’t have needed to be an Einstein to figure out what was going to happen. Users churn out “original” AI models and upload them for their rewards, even though their personal contribution to the creation of the model was essentially NIL. And because they can churn them out fast, they can upload a lot.
MW should have a separate area for AI models (I’m betting there’s a relatively easy way to analyze a mesh and detect if it was AI generated), and users should get less credit for an AI generated model as one they put actual sweat equity in to generating.
Otherwise, eventually (probably sooner rather than later) someone’s going to script the AI model generation and upload process and churn out 1000s overnight.
Mine failed on that one too. It’s still open to providing more supporting evidence though…
The thing that I’m really curious about is, do people really satisfactorily print many of these AI generated models? Many look fantastic in the presented renders, especially the decorative ones, but they will need plenty of supports and fine-tuning to look decent printed.
Or do people just give Boosts to a nicely rendered model without intending to print it? Or did they downloaded/opened the model, found it hard to print, and stopped there? Or tried and failed but didn’t bother to rate thereafter.
Probably only @MakerWorld will have an idea from the data they have gathered.
In the meantime, I suspect good designed-for-3D-printing (DF3DP) models, especially the more complex ones, are losing to the one-piece volume generated non-DF3DP models in getting views.
Hopefully MW will evaluate if this is something they want for their platform. If they don’t mind this trend, then it’s time to re-tool and get a production line going
I don’t think they’re missing out, they took part in the competition there

An another one… Look at these stats, I want to die, it’s insane. The first 10 more recents models are so shitty.
Look at most downloaded on there - those are actual designed models that are useful and those are ones that did those stats. It looks like the “not so great” stuff started on 29th Oct. Turn to dark side maybe?
At closer look these seem to be niknaks as part of their Advent Calendar. They haven’t made it quite clear enough as it could be reasonably popular given the right packaging. The great thing is they’ve actually printed these
My 2 cents…
I’d like to be able to block AI “makers”. The current blocking feature only keeps them from contacting you. I want to block everything they upload from my feed. I can do that on other platforms, why not here? That would solve my immediate irritation by not having to navigate garbage. It however doesn’t solve the issue with everyone else’s uploads still drowning in an AI cesspool.
Something else, I have mixed feelings on people being able to boost and give a thumbs up to a model they haven’t printed.
