The good thing so far is that the AI available to consumers has absolutely no idea about mechanical parts. Tell an AI to do a box that can be closed and it will fail.
But let’s face it: AI is slowly getting better and better; I don’t think anyone would realize this is a fake - unless you look extremely closely to the font of batteries. Especially after I asked about layer linens.

AI does not “understand” it only gives the impression it does. It is only building on what it has found. AI is very bad at things it has no data on. It can find lot of Potato mashers. I don’t know if it could come up with a new design of one. I am sure it could come up with one that I have not seen before. then randomly mix it with other factors and generate an original image. That does not mean it understands squishing boiled potatoes. Or understands gripping force, of the handheld utensil.

The one that the MW person is using lets anybody download the badges. There’s no oversight. If you want to appear more legit, you can pay them a monthly subscription where they will check your work and provide a public facing page where you can upload proof that you created it by yourself.
For me, that’s way too much effort (ADHD; I can’t remember what I ate for breakfast let alone what I did in what order when creating something), and also, I’d be providing even more training data by showing my design process. Actually…that might be a good idea. I could probably break an AI with my hot mess approach to design
I kinda love how regular folks are realizing that incompetant people wielding powerful tools still produce incompetant results. The tools make it appear different though, until it comes time to perform “uhhh yeah lets not use this photo, make up a new one”. Is it solely a tool problem, or is deception the problem?
The issue was never the Snake Oil, it was the salesman with a big lying mouth looking for money. Some things never change.
It is very much the tool used by the ignorant that is the problem. Very similar to the misuse of Photoshop to tweak a photo to a little bit thinner body, and many develop unrealistic expectations of their own body. AI is nether good or bad, it is how it is used.
Exactly, but AI is being bad when, for example - yeah, yeah, it’s an old topic - it’s constantly being used as a front cover. If people can’t manage to use a tool responsibly on their own, it needs to be guided and regulated.
We’re really not talking about anything impossible here: a real photo as cover. Even if it were just an option you could select in the search. Just like proper tagging of models, which isn’t monitored at all - I mean, not even a little bit.
A bot is just a tool, too - neither good nor bad - but it’s generally agreed that you shouldn’t let a bot farm points on MakerWorld, which, unfortunately, is what’s happening.
It’s the overall context: AI uncontrolled, bots and point farming uncontrolled, tagging uncontrolled.
