For one of my favorite dragon models, I printed just the head and made it into a keychain for my son. I ended up really liking it and I figured others might as well.
For this model, remixes are not allowed so I can’t add it as a new model. But am I allowed to add it as a profile to the current model?
I technically didn’t make any altercations as such, it would basically just be a “head only” profile where I’ve sliced away and deleted the body. I almost exclusively use the app only so I know that I always appreciate when people make key chain specific models. Although maybe no one will find it since it’s hidden amongst the profiles, but still.
If the head is a separate part and you haven’t altered the geometry in any way, there shouldn’t be a problem. However, if it is already a separate part, you can deselect the parts you don’t need in the Handy App, making it unnecessary to upload it as a separate profile.
I assume you had to split the object into several parts to print the head only. This action alters the geometry of the original object as published by the creator, which could be considered an unauthorized modification. Therefore, I would argue that it is technically not allowed.
If the model has been altered, as stated in your title, then it’s a remix and not allowed. In fact some have tried to evade license rule by hiding altered models inside print profiles. This is also not allowed.
You can always ask the original model designer though. If they don’t mind then you can do that.
To me, this is still considered a remix. Cutting the body from the dragon is technically altering the original. I would avoid this action. Maybe just put it in the comment section what you did and how cool it was.
Agreed, doing this for your personal use, no one cares.
Doing this and uploading it as a new profile isn’t correct as you have taken one thing that includes a head and a body and creating a new thing that is just the head is a remix.
Profiles are meant to allow all printers to benefit from the designer’s work if the designer didn’t provide a profile for whatever reason.
Adding an A1 mini profile when one didn’t exist, whilst not altering the original design is what adding profiles is for. Changing parameters so it works with different materials or grouping multiple items in a way that allows faster prints is also fine.
When you do this, I suggest asking the designer if they have considered doing what you did. They may think it’s a great idea, and create a new model with just the head for the keyring idea. You may also get a shout-out.
