AMS 2 PRO – Ridiculous Limitation


A manual air outlet is a little surprising, seeing as the AMS2 will do it automatically.

While you can’t run the drying while printing the Pro2 is very well sealed. Add some desiccant pods and it will stay at 2 or 3% for a week.

I just came here to make a feature request about this topic. Glad you already did.
I also have high humidity here and simply opening the AMS after drying to load the filaments again means +10% humidity.

  • Please allow drying without rotation or you can do 1 half forward rotation and then rotate back again, which is equal to 360 spool drying. For some distance of the half rotation you can even pull some filament into the tubes and once the tube length is used, just continue spinning without pulling the filament. The filament will be a bit loose until you reverse the spinning again, but this shouldn’t be a big problem.
  • This way you can allow printing while drying

If it wasn’t for the rfid automation, I never ever would’ve gotten an ams 2 pro. Can’t even do 2 filaments at once for the h2d doulbe nozzle. There’s no “pro” on this design

Please confirm if possible if the AMS2 Pro and AMS HT will get print while drying features.

I might rather buy Sunlu heater for AMS for my remaining printer combos if an feature is not added to the firmware.

I printed desiccant containers for my AMS 2 and with them loaded my humidity reads 0% for days now.
Nowhere near as low in the AMS HT which has little room for desiccant.
I am sure that printing while drying is clearly not as easy as it would seem or the feature would be in the AMS.
I suspect it feeds poorly when hot…

The team is working on expanding the features provided, but we need to make sure the provided features work as expected and don’t cause clogs.

It is worth considering that using a heater to dry the filament in the AMS can cause issues, especially if an increased temperature is used.

The filament will get softer, and increases the chances for the feeder, or internal feeder to get clogged, due to the added pressure on the filament while printing.

We recommend caution when doing this.

What if you let the end-user take the responsibility and let them chose if they want to take that risk or not.
Enter a disclaimer that the end-user is bypassing bambu labs recommendations by drying while printing.
I don’t see the difference of using a third party heater and feed the filament through the external feed.
The only difference might be the feed system internally in the AMS.

Can’t wait for that to happen. Me and my A1 and X1 moved to a humid state, the A1 has been sitting idle since then. Soon as I see the update for A1 compatibility it’s an immediate buy for me

Wouldn’t it make sense to at least allow low temp heater like 30C or 35C to assist with keeping the humidity low when printing?

So you would have two modes. A drying mode when not printing and a low humidity assist mode when printing.

I got my AMS 2 Pro yesterday. I was about to use it with the P1S and so far I am quite disappointed. I did some research previous of buying and I found the “static” vs “rotation” drying mode in the Bambu Wiki. Now it seems like this is not even possible with the P1S, because there is no setting for it or it is automatically detected by inserted filament. The latter would not be an issue, but: The text only says this is not possible if drying temp is above melting/softening temperature of PLA or TPU. Well great, but there is no option of setting the temp below that for these filaments. Seriously?!

I don’t even want to print when drying. I just want to be a lazy customer and have the AMS for convenience. I would like to leave the filament inserted, dry it and set a humidity percentage where the drying should stop and then begin again, when overstepped - like a lot of other dryers do. It’s quite simple. If I start a print while drying just interrupt it and start the print a few minutes later when everything has cooled off. That would be fine with me.
In this state, with this feature set I am leaning towards returning the AMS 2 Pro, because it does not have any benefit for me over my old AMS 1. I just know that I will never use the drying function this way. Very disappointing.

You guys may already be working on this, but I would think just like the temperature of an extruder is dynamically controlled depending on what it’s doing (especially in the case of a dual-extruder, where you have one of the extruders at an idle temperature while the other is running), surely there should be a way to have some kind of active-humidity management mode that maximizes drying when the printer isn’t in use, but runs at a somewhat lower temperature when it is in use to avoid over-softening the filament.

Something like that would allow drying to occur, even in a reduced capacity, while the printer is in-use, and then ramp the temperature back up when the AMS isn’t being used again. Currently, it requires active user intervention to even enable the drying feature between prints. Personally, in a perfect world, I would want the AMS to not even require my intervention to activate the drying function, it already knows what its humidity level is, it should be able to dry itself automatically (assuming you don’t care about power draw, perhaps have that as an opt-in function)

That would be good, but there are some rules regarding electronics and green energy that companies follow. To have it running with the heater on all the time would not be energy efficient. Thinking along those lines is probably why they haven’t done it. Mine is idle right now but I am 60 miles away from the machine and would LOVE to have it do a drying cycle while its not in use.

Ah and what companies are following these rules of green energy? Sunlu and Chitu Dreyer start drying when humidity raises above XY%. And it is good that way, because drying down from a very high humidity takes a while and not everybody has the time to do so. Also this raises the question if it is indeed more energy efficient to dry once (?) from a high humidity down or hold it on a certain level…

It should be the customers decision what setting is needed for his printing environment and the AMS 2 Pro is just unnecessarily limiting a lot of features at a price point where this is just out of the question.

Energy Star comes to mind. Its that Eco Friendly prac thats tossed around. Some countries will only allow the sale of goods if they have certain ratings and such. It’s possible that certain things like this may have been disabled to meet certain specs? Just guessing here. I do know for a fact that Energy Star appliances suck and wind up being trashed after just a few years, filling up landfills. Sure, they save on energy but pollute the planet in other ways. I know of two LG refrigerators that are currently occupying a dump site because the compressors pooped the bed and filled the coils with oil, and they can’t be repaired.

I’m definitely on board with being able to dry with filament inserted in PTFE tubes, and printing as well.

Limit the temperature if you’re concerned about softening while printing, or in the PTFE tubes.

My AnyCubic Ace units heat while printing and loaded, though they only heat to 55°c max to begin with. I’m almost thinking they default to 45°c for PLA, though that can be raised.

The Sunlu FilaDryer S4 has an automatic mode, whereby if the humidity goes above the set point (30%-50%) it will run until it drops to 25%. The Creality SpacePi X4 also has some mention of auto dehumidification. So it is a thing, and correctly it is the end users choice whether it is enabled or not. Star rating and Energy Star requirements are one thing… they are typically only valid when the appliance is configured in a specific way (the defaults/energy saver mode)… ie. typical PC has plenty of options in the BIOS/UEFI that would void it’s Energy Star compliance rating. At the end of the day, it should be my choice… they can make suggestions and recommendations… but they don’t know my setup and my use case.
