AMS 2 PRO – Ridiculous Limitation

Can I dry filament while printing?

Currently, drying is not supported for AMS 2 Pro / AMS HT units that are actively involved in the printing process, including those that may be used for automatic refill during the current print job. Printing while drying is not yet supported.

However, I purchased the AMS2 and its power supply together to use with the P1S but I still need to use the Creality external dryer

As a newbie, it’s painfully difficult seeing conflicting messages. Or it’s just my inability to understand, at this time…

There might be a reason to not print while drying, the filament being printed will be too soft and can jam up the feed mechanism on the AMS. If the AMS had metal gears, then it could probably do both, but I feel this is the reason why it can’t do both. It would be great if the idle AMS could do drying while the other is in use.

I just discovered that I can print with AMS B while AMS A is drying, though I have to move the external power supply to A to avoid power interruptions during print. This is on the H2D, haven’t tried the X1C though that one will not let me dry PLA if its inserted in the feed tubes. PETG though had no limit.

It does not clear the AI alert for power limitations though.

EDIT: In fact the AI alert has not cleared even a day later and a full complete cycle on both dryers. Might have to reset the machine for it to clear since it didn’t when I actually plugged the power supply into AMS A.

If you have a power supply on each AMS it will allow you to dry in the one that is not actively being used for printing. I have a total of 4 AMS2 + 2 HT units, evenly split across the 2 extruders and utilize this all the time. It is beyond annoying though that you cannot control drying via the app (desktop or mobile) and that you cannot dry + print.

My annoying bit is between the 2 I have they have to be unloaded before drying can start. I don’t understand why I have to yank the end of the filament out of one to start drying with the other.

Have you tried with PETG? The X1C does force me to unload PLA but not PETG. The H2D does not force unloading regardless of whats loaded.

It’s a limitation of the AMS-HT. If you have more than one they all have to be unloaded before starting to dry. Once drying starts you can load the other HTs you may have. The AMS is unaffected by this.

it would be cool if the filament could just move in the ptfe tube for rotation, just change directio if rotation once filament has reaches the end

i print pla drying a 55 degrees c on p1s and it works fine

It’s worse and worse as you have more AMS units. I have 4 Pro units and 2 HT units… Drying honestly with with these units has become a pain, just because I cannot do so via the apps. I work so much! So, so much and the vast majority(even when I’m home) are done remotely…

I simply, cannot sit in front of my printers to take moments that I can be sleeping, and catching up on rest, to fiddle and click around with 2 printers and multiple AMS to dry…

I sold 4 generation 1 AMS units with my old P1’s, that now, I wish I would have kept… No they didn’t dry, but for me, majorly, neither do these… Remote anything in my scenario takes preference over the “annoying requirement” to be in front of the machine for anything seeing related.

And here’s the kicker: I don’t use PLA. Haven’t used PLA on either of these machines(not even for that calibration…), and it hasn’t been in my arsenal, as far as purchasing PLA long, long time ago… So why am I being punished? Because PLA supposedly melts?! Not my problem or concern TBH, so do I care? No, not in one bit… If PLA is the only type that causes the issue, disable it for that type and enable for the rest: don’t make the rest of us suffer for that basic filament… Despite a lot of people being “stuck” on it, for whatever their reason…

Yes I wish that these could be set to dry with the app, or better yet, dry when the machine is idle at a preset Humidity level. As for PLA, the H2D doesn’t stop you from drying if they are engaged, only the X1C has that limit, that I know of, I only have H and X units, but PETG is allowed to dry without intervention. For that matter it would be nice to edit the filament in the AMS with the app too. This way you can work around the PLA limitation by switching to PETG and adjusting the temp down to PLA remotely. Yeah, being remote sucks, been there, done that.

Any remote functionality at this point is welcome IMHO… That device is not living up to a tenth of it’s potential…

I did that with the full set like in both of my original AMSs. All three keep the humidity below 20%. When the start approaching 20% I pour out the old and pout in new desiccant. Put the 6 (or 7 for the old AMS) pods back to resume printing. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I dry the old desiccant for reuse. The directions are on the package. When they say 10 minutes on high, I think they mean a LARGE quantity. I would try 1/2 of a Mason jar full at a time, and 3 minutes at a time. If you open the microwave as soon as it is done with your face close to the door and don’t feel a wave of hot humid air coming out, it is almost done. Hopefully you can tell hot air from hot humid air with your faceometer! :smiley:

I have a coffee warmer (from Amazon) with three temps. 130, 150 and 175. I set the jar of desiccant on it and set it to 150F. I tuck a paper towel an inch or so into the opening, and rest one of those cheap rectangular humidity sensor in the paper towel valley. Form the paper towel so most of the moisture has to go through the paper towel. Initially the humidity will higher than the room, but when it gets down to 10% I remove it from the heat and cap the jar. Done, and ready for the next replacement. I think with those cheapies ever go below 10%.

So is anyone timing how long it takes to reach the max temp?

for me it took 2 hours and 16 minutes to finally reach 65c with 22c ambient temperature.

So I got into a habit of setting them to dry when I know the machines will be idle overnight. It worked, all 6 of them are either single digit or mid teens. The one H2D took forever to get down into the teens even with fresh desiccant in all the containers. I added spool containers to several of them and that seemed to bring it down even more. That one have all 8 spools with full rolls, the X1C only has 2 in each, the PETG one is at 5%. My first H2D are sitting at 13% with nearly all full spools. I think the location has something to do with it, as it sit next to the door into the rest of the basement is directly across from the air handler for the Mini Split so it gets a lot of air movement while the other one is off to the left of the air handler in a dead zone for air movement.

It is so annoying to pull out filament from the feeder. PLEASE, remove this limitation.

I was wondering if a future software update could introduce a “rotate spool while still in the feeder” scenario:

Filament on a full spool has 16.5 cm diameter → so a full rotation of the spool results in approx. 52 cm of filament. So to do a full rotation we have to “put” the 52 cm filament somewhere.

  1. Below the AMS 2 Pro we have approx. 20-25 cm of PTFE tubes for each spool, before they collapse into the 4-in-1 adapter at the back - this would result in almost ½ turn for the spool…
  2. The AMS could just roll ½ turn more so the filament would get a slightly bit loose on the spool?
  3. Perhaps ½ turn would already be enough turning for drying?

I would like Bambu to test such a method - then drying would be less of a pain.
