I don’t wanna turn on the printer to dry, the AMS should do that automatically so that the filament is always dry (before printing). I do get that for very long prints the drying while printing is not a bad thing. For me it does not matter for 2-4h prints. Starting a print and realizing that the filament is not dry anymore, running to the printer to start printing and postponing the print for half a day just is not convenient and the AMS to expensive for that kind of sh*t. That’s why a drying function, like every other filament dryer has, would be more helpful for me than drying while printing and for the latter bambu already has an excuse (=filament softening in the tubes).
This appears to have been going on for some time. Any word yet from development when we might be able to “dry while printing”? This really does seem like an extremely silly limitation and not one that should be all that difficult to correct.
Does Bambu Labs need help writing up some firmware? I do have a standalone dryer, but having to buy a dryer lid from EIBOS and then print adapters to fit the AMS 2 Pro seems downright silly.
For the AMS that powers the drying through the printer, that may be a limitation, but the one that has external power should be able to dry while printing, so why does it not? Why not be able to dry via the app? That is a bigger limitation than not being able to dry while printing.
In my mind, if you are drying your filament because you just realized it was too wet after starting your print, it is too late to try and drive the moisture out while printing. You would have to have very high heat to make any difference while the print job is on progress. There have been projects to dry the filament in line while printing. From what I have seen, the filament has to be in the drying chamber for so long that the chamber either becomes very large or the print has to be slowed down to a crawl to see any appreciable amount of moisture removal.
Now, scheduling or maintaining while idle, yes, that could and shoulds be an option.
Drying while powered off, It isn’t possible with the current hardware. The intelligence to control the process is in the printer, not the AMS. An add-on to have a controller in-between the printer and AMS to act as a controller could be an option. There just isn’t the standalone capability and it wasn’t designed to be that way.
I read the whole topic and realized that many people miss one very interesting limitation when drying in AMC. Try uploading the same plastic with its description in the AMC to two AMCs. After that, start drying the plastic on one of the AMCs. But now try to start printing from the second AMC using plastic in the same way (manufacturer, type and color), which is loaded into the AMC where the plastic is dried. As a result, the printer will not allow you to use this plastic. What is this restriction for? Either I have to depersonalize the plastic I’m drying every time, or I have to disable the automatic plastic loading mode.
Agree, it’s a total different scenario. My point is to highlight the stupidity of the Bamby logic. Their AMS is “just following their logic” already totally unsafe. Indeed, in a different scenario. Ennoying their customers by taking away a functionality that should simply exist is unacceptable. And here I’m talking about the fact the AMS doesn’t allow drying while printing. No need to repeat why, a great list has already been proposed above.
Some progress: Drying while printing and starting drying remotely.
It seems like it’s not for the P2S though - at least I don’t have the option after an update and there is no new Firmwareupdate showing.
Seems to be limited to the H2 as of now.
yeah, I should have gotten an H2C…
It will be available on each printer series. You just have to wait for the firmware.
Like drying with PLA in the AMS with the P1S - which never came for weeks/months until I got the P2S. Yeah…
Drying while printing AND drying via the app are part of the beta program. You have to join the program to get the firmware that activates these two. Its a promising improvement as it does two items that are asked for in this thread. Just waiting on the firmware to upload to give it a try. It is trickle down so starting with H2D, then C/S then the smaller ones that use AMS.
Also keep in mind that reduced temperatures can prolong the drying time by a huge amount or maybe not have the wanted effect at all.
I would always dry at max temperature while not printing or in an external dryer over a homeopathic drying at low temperature while printing. Much more time and energy efficient.
I’m still sceptical if giving in on this feature request was a good idea at all. It might result on lots of people having wet filament print issues but “thinking” they dried it enough. Same way some people think having filament in a box with silica would actively dry it…
Curious for first weight / scale drying result tests at reduced temp. Wouldn’t be surprised if it takes 3-4x longer if it has an effect at all.
I would suspect that the drying “feature” is more attuned given the filament is already dry to a certain percentage for decent printing, and more for additional drying while it is printing after adding in a new roll that is in the acceptable print range. Some heat at that point is better than no heat at all.
Edit, it is also very helpful to expel moisture that gets trapped inside the AMS when opening the cover to replace or swap spools.
Relating to this. I’ve updated Bambu Studio and my P1S to the latest version.
Now, when I start the drying process on the AMS 2 Pro, I can choose to turn on or off spool rotation.
Now, by default, the rotation feature is turned off. So I can start the drying process without unloading the filament from the ptfe tubes. But still I can’t dry while printing. Just why?
BAMBULAB READ THIS!!!
This is really ridiculous! I just got switching adapter since P2S was complaining that it can not print and dry at the same time without it!!! Now, I do understand that due to pwr limitations BUT what now?
I got the adapter, connected it and low and behold NOTHING! ![]()
It simply wont print and dry….
I never used rotation option since I have 0 intention of removing filament and securing it and then re inserting bla bla bla! I used to have simple esun (white) filament dryer and used it all the time without internal fan (too loud-removed and filled everything with silica bags) and it was on max heating all fine 0 issues and perfect prints! Now I have this expensive thing that is great but so STUPIDLY limited!
If the issue is that temps are making filament soft then it is BS! We all know how PETG resistant to heat is so there is 0 issue here and even if it is for some reason then jut freaking implement temp limit when printing and drying. 50c for example for PETG, 35 for PLA etc….
If I am going to print something for one day or more then I might as well use the time and printers noise to cancel out AMS dryer noise!!!
Also latest Studio update should have enabled this! But you kept it only for H2D Expensive Giant??? What the ■■■■ BambuLab?
I really don’t get it! Bambu do not start acting smart now! You are building great stuff and we love it BUT as soon as you start pulling fast ones and we feel being taken for granted and stupid we will start looking around ![]()
guys i need help i recently bought Switching Adapter for my ams 2 pro to drying while i printing i connect everything together but still received the error code due to power limits does anyone know if this is a software bug or what THANKS
I agree, and think this is something Bambu Labs can easily fix with a software patch or update.
Is your AMS 2 Pro plugged into the wall? Can you provide any pictures? I have a similar operating system and may be able to help.
Yes it’s plug to the wall directly i don’t have pics at the moment but i spoke with Bambu support and they said Drying is not currently supported for AMS 2 Pro units used during printing, however i saw someone on you youtube using drying and printing way without any power limits error
