AMS Failure - Filamet Piece Stuck?

My filament ran out and I cannot unload what was left. I put another reel on the AMS, but unloading does not get out the filament. I tried loading to push it through but no luck. What should I do? Do I need to take things apart?

I’m not sure how to take the tubing apart. There is some kind of cylindrical, non-smooth piece with a tube in and out, but couldn’t figure out how to separate any of that to gain access to any filament.

Push the top of the PTFE coupler just below the red arrow on step 1.

If the filament still extends beyond the build chamber, that coupler is a bit easier. Again, push the coupler to pull out the PTFE. The secon green arrow from the top or right.

If the filament pretends to be stuck, just use the display controls to unload a little.

So it’s no use trying to see what is happening with the filament outside the printer? That I should go in and get access to the nozzle? That cover is a bear to put back on. :wink:

What do u mean push the coupler to pull out the tube? Push that external, cylindrical coupler toward the filament inlet of the machine?

actually is that coupler able to be disconnected so I can take a look at where the filament end is?

Not sure if tis photo is indicative of anything, tube-wise.

With any PTFE coupler, like the one in your photo or elsewhere, they are held in place with friction.

To disconnected them, press down the part at the end where the PTFE tube was pushed through, it should move 2-3mm, it will stop when it can move no further.

Pull the PTFE tube out at the same time, it should come out with ease. The grip it has is released when you press it down.

The hub is a different question though as the place you need to get to is actually inside the buffer or hub(depending on what you are using). that is the outpiut (right side).

If you are careful, you can place something like a flat screwdriver in the open channel to apply gentle pressure to replicate the instructions I gave above. The mechanism is the same.

If you are being cautious, unscrew the buffer by the two screws and you can easily manipulate the mechanism.

The input side of the buffer/hub has the same problem. If you has not printed and used the easy release PTFE buttons, you will need to remove the buffer/hub by the two screws to manually manipulate the tube.

Depending on where the problem is, you may need to dissasemble the AMS itself, this is a pain based on how they built it, something they made easier with the AMS 2 Pro.

The clog is inside the AMS. I think I see how to open the AMS unit. Any tips / tricky steps there?

btw, when i originlly tried to unload, it kept trying to do it in spool 3, where the clog was. I tried unloading, bbut he AMS always spun spool 3, i guess because it still thinks that reel 3 is the 1 to unload. is there a sensor inside the AMS where filament must still be signaling which reel to spin up and out??

There are many,

Each of the four feeders has filament detection/presence sensors.
If you don’t have them yet, get yourself a set of screwdriver style hex drivers in 1.5mm, 2.0mm, 2.5mm, 3mm.
You can not work on these printers without them. You WILL work on these printers. Parts wear out,

got it. Piece of filament in a tube in the AMS, accessed by taking off the big container in the AMS.
