I ordered some TPU to try out the AMS HT that’s been sitting here for months unopened. I’ve read the recommendation for feeding, where the heck are you all installing these things? It seems like it has to float in space sideways next to the printer?
I’ve seen a super tall mount that I’ll absolutely knock over, and a mount to put it backwards and on top with the lid open? Is this really the answer?
I run all four units on top of my printers, feeding TPU through the bypass, then through the PTFE tubes into the printer’s bypass, and so on. The only modification I’ve made is replacing the PTFE tubing with PTFE Tough, and I also had to fix the rollers in the AMS HT because they were rotating with too much friction. I print TPU and PEBA ranging from 65A to 95A this way.
I must admit I dont quite get the obsession with using AMS HT for TPU printing. Is it because you guys saw it in the wiki? Its much easier to just feed it from external spool, that is how I print all my TPUs. Unless you are doing a super long multi-day print and live in a super humid environment I just dont see the point, its not going to absorb moisture in a few hours. Just more friction with the rollers, asking for under extrusion and other issues.
I don’t use an external spool holder, and it’s convenient to keep the TPU in its respective box at all times.
That said, the setup is definitely simpler if you skip the AMS HT, since I had to replace the PTFE tubing and fix the roller friction. But once adjusted, they work very well.
I think you’re right… I bought it originally in a fit of needing all the things at launch and it’s been sitting here looking at me for a maybe a year now. I don’t even have a good TPU use case, I just figured I should use this thing and bought a roll. Seems a bit pointless in reality…
Its great for feeding the left hot end if you have a H2D, thats how I use mine. Or as an addition to the AMS 2 for more colors (H2C), also a great dryer. So can be put to good use, just not with TPU.
It’s different for each of my four AMS HT units. I disassembled them and applied dry PTFE lubricant to any areas that felt rough or caused hang-ups, continuing until they rotated smoothly. In addition, ensure that the spool is positioned correctly — the automatic feed system can compensate for slight misalignment by forcing the spool to roll, but the pass-through mode cannot and will jam instead.
