The second socket was only ever for future upgrades. No future upgrades have ever been announced by Bambu Lab, although there are a few third-party upgrades available that use the socket for power.

There is a plan (albeit delayed) to allow the AMS 2 Pro to work with the A series, again, no suggestion that it would work with more than one.

Also, no suggestion the original AMS would work with the A series.

I would like an option to upgrade my A1 mini to use the AMS (original, currently attached to one of my P1S printers) and then add an AMS 2 Pro the donor printer.

I have no need for an AMS 2 Pro, but I could be tempted if the above scenario was available.

An update, it seems the future update for the A series will allow A series users to do the following.

  • Connect ONE AMS lite (as has always been)

    or

  • Connect One to Four AMS, AMS 2 Pro or AMS HT units (any combination) at the same time.

This will allow you to connect up to 16 colours (four AMS or AMS 2 Pro units) to an A1 mini or A1 printer if you push your existing AMS Lite to the side after disconnecting it.

It will achieve this with a new and unreleased A-series buffer.

The new buffer and firmware update will be available in October (fingers crossed, they have let us down many times before, as even this is late).

I foresee three things:

  1. The A1 series will be offered in AMS Lite, AMS and AMS 2 Pro variants
  2. There will be a lot of A-series hubs sold
  3. A lot of people will try to offload their now-redundant AMS Lites

If people only require 4 colours, the existing AMS Lite will be fine. For anyone who needs more than 4 colours, the AMS or AMS 2 Pro will be tempting.

Technically speaking, the existing 4-port A-series buffer could handle up to 4 AMS units. I imagine only minor tweaks would be required if they built it into the future A1 series, an A2 mini and an A2, for example.

I am not sure what form the new buffer will take or where it will be mounted.

But someone (me) will be looking forward to the ability.

It is worth noting that an AMS or AMS 2 Pro on an A1 mini or A1 will take longer to print a large multi-colour model than it would using just an AMS Lite.

The reason for this is the length of travel the filament must traverse to get to the print head and back to the AMS.

With the AMS Lite, this path is short, a couple of centimetres, as the filaments are parked just above the hot end. With the AMS, there is a single PTFE tube from the AMS to the hot end and that must clear before the next filament is pushed through.

So at this time you can buy an AMS pro 2, for only $30 bucks MORE then the coast of a new A1 printer.
So how very lucky we are, lol.

How about the AMS Lite is £60 more expensive than the entire A1 mini.

You have to wonder the premium being charged there. The printer is way more complicated with far more injection moulded parts and significantly more circuit boards.
