AMS Lite Color Printing Issue

I’m trying to print a 4 color design (with PETG) on my A1 with the AMS Lite. Here’s what it looks like:

As you can see the larger areas of the Blue aren’t fully covering their areas. The smaller sections (and even a few of the other larger areas) look Ok. Trying to determine what I can do to get this to fill in better. If I up the Flow Ratio a bit for the Blue could that help to fill these in? Any other options for trying to correct this? Appreciate any guidance. Thanks.

Upping the flow ratio should do the trick.
But try to run both flow rate and flow dynamics calibration in Bambu Studios calibration tab.

Not sure I understand your statement about running flow rate & flow dynamics calibration in the Calibration tab. Where is that? I see the Calibration button on the Device tab but there’s no flow rate or flow dynamics there. My plan was to up the Flow Ratio in the filament profile by 5% (currently at 0.95, increasing to 0.99).

When I slice this, here’s what it looks like:

Looks like it’s not filling the areas as completely as I’d like. Again, guessing if I increase Flow Ratio that should help to fill this in. But not sure what this will do to the Blue areas that currently are filled pretty well. Are there any other options?

Also, it might help to switch your wall generator from Classic to Arachne or the other way around and see if that helps.

But the slicer image suggests that I’m looking at the initial layer, right? If so, this would indicate an adhesion issue. Try to increase the initial layer flow ratio after you calibrated your filaments. Rinsing your build plate with warm water and soap is also worth trying.

Yes, but I’m not showing flow rate or flow rate calibration. Running Studio 2.0.1. I’d show a screen shot but attempting a test print at the moment. Printing the first 4 layers to see if the flow rate increase helps this problem.

It’s actually layer 2. The Blue is on Layers 2 & 3. That’s the only place Blue is used on this print. I always wash my build plate with soap & warm water between prints.

Does this mean that you are trying to print the blue parts in thin air?
You should try to either have this on the top side or make it flush with the bottom.

It’s not my design and has been printed by others without issue. It’s just 1 layer, so I wouldn’t necessarily say that’s printing in the air. All the other colored areas (all on layers 2 & 3) look fine so really don’t think that’s the issue. I guess I could cut off that bottom layer and move all this to layer 1. Still printing the test to see what it looks like with the flow ratio increase. If that still looks bad, I’ll try cutting that bottom layer off and see if that helps.

A 0.2mm distance increase is quite a bit, especially for an initial layer.
You would have to set your flow ratio to 200% to compensate for this missing layer, but that would come back to haunt you in the following layer.
Is that design hosted somewhere? Could you share a link?

Here’s the specific profile I’m trying to use: “Knurled Flat Cover - 2 Per Day - Small”.

thanks for sharing. Looking at the reviews for the print profile, I can see that they all show similar issues. You could cut off 0.19mm of the bottom, leaving you with just enough detail for painting the model again while forcing the painted regions to print on the first layer. (Painting data is lost when cutting the model)

Have you tried the following?

  1. Enable wall generator Arachne
  2. Change object order
  3. Customise the order colours are printed

Wall generator
Wall generator is likely the biggest help for your situation, you can see its benefits in the sliced version.

The Arachne value is changed in the Quality tab (far left of Prepare tab), scroll down to Wall Generator.

Object order
Assuming your colour is generated by different objects assigned with different colours, drag your yellow background to the top of the list and order the remaining objects as required. If you have more than one yellow layer, be cautious if some of it needs to overlap other objects in different colours, the order is important. If you have the choice to colour objects rather than paint, always colour objects, painting can have unexpected consequences especially when you only require thin layers worth. Painting is better for things like ornaments or well defined areas.

Colour order
Customising the order the colours are printed by using the cog/nut buttons next to the build plate in the Prepare Tab.

Look at the two (currently bottom) options related to customising colour order. Choose customise first layer and drag and drop the swatches so the lightest is first getting darker. Repeat for subsequent layers.

This can limit artefacts from darker colours bleeding through light colours in each layer.

Good job summarizing the thread above.
Non of this addresses the issue he is facing. Check the model and try slicing it.
You will see that the missing support on the painted region is causing the issue.

I asked questions, I was expecting answers.

I apologise if I was unable to open the file while I am, resting in my literal death bed at 5am while I can’t sleep.

Nothing I asked was a bad question or off topic.

Answers to those questions would have given me thoughts for the next step.

I have my ways of helping which has garnered significantly more recognition for my efforts through asking, listening and supporting than you have, not being whatever you think you are doing by attacking others.

I am with Malc on this one.

Make sure to use

  • well dried and calibrated PETG with the
  • Arachne wall generator and
  • reduce accelerations to 25% of defaults.
  • You’ll also want to tick “Wipe on retract” in the “Other” filament settings.
  • You’ll get better symbol and text definition if yellow is printed first.
  • Especially, if this also uses Arachne and a concentric pattern.

PETG loves to stick to the nozzle and therefore hates jerks from rapid direction changes. It is also rather sensitive to moisture (curling, warping and increased nozzle affinity happen long before increased oozing & stringing. Cratering, steam popping is pretty much the last “warning”).

All true and valid, but check the model, none of this is the problem.
Printing color islands in the air (no bridging and no support) will leave you with artifacts. This is even visible in the review photos on the model on MakerWorld.

Thanks for the pointer. I did focus on the pic (which indicates material underneath the blue) and was a bit baffled about the flow recommendation.

Evidently, printing in the air is only possible when my apprentice finally gets back from the warehouse with the Siemens air hook I asked him to fetch :sweat_smile: Only been a few months :rofl:

Fortunately, @sealyons was able to synch his AMS and hence print using the profile by his comments on MakerWorld.

A few updates. First, my PETG is always kept dry. Always stored in air tight containers and dried before use (8 hrs @ 60). I did switch to Arachne wall generation. But this was my first use of Arachne and getting settings dialed in is somewhat difficult. I used ChatGPT to help me better understand the terminology and give me some starting values and after several shots I think I got it dialed in fairly well. ChatGPT is really nice since you can upload an image of your issue and it analyzes and gives you recommendations. Granted it did a lot of hallucinations but with guidance I think it did a reasonable job. Here are my Arachne settings:

Wall transitioning threshold Angle: 5
Wall transitioning filter margin: 30%
Wall transition length: 50%
Wall distribution count: 3
Minimum wall width: 60%
Minimum feature size: 15%

Yellow is printed first. I also made a series of changes to the Process profile including reducing Outer & Inner Wall Line width to 0.35 mm, slowing inner & outer wall speed for the first few layers, reducing acceleration (but not as much as suggested), etc…

Trying to complete the print and will post an image of the results once available. It’s not perfect but better.
