AMS material switch keeps on producing clogging errors

Hi in a 2 colour model I notice that there are clog errors. The one colour has a small artifact in the print, so not much material is extruded for the colour. I noticed the following:

If the AMS is on top of the printer, the clogs occur. If the AMS is on the right side of the printer looking at the printer front side, the clogs don’t occur. With the AMS on top of the printer, I can see that the filament proceeds all the way to the print head. Does anyone have an idea what can happen here?

I read the forum topic Nozzle clogs after every automatic filament change and I don’t expect it is heat creep as the door is open and once it goes to 1 colour all works well. It also has no issues when the AMS is next to the printer. In this position the filament exit and power/data cables face the side panel of the printer. With the AMS on top of the printer I can’t see any kinks in the tubing that could cause a problem. If anything, it looks as if the tubing has more cork screws when placed next to the printer.

My setup is a P1S from June 2025. The AMS is an AMS2 with single buffer. The filament is PLA Basic.

Define your clogs

Eg:

  • filament becomes soft and stuck at extruder gear, wrap around the extruder gear, or build up a blob at the extruder gear
  • filament stuck at heat throat which hard to pull out or push it through nozzle manually
  • filament just stucks at nozzle, which you can pull out easily

What you are saying doesn’t make sense much.

You can also check the resistance of the PTFE tube from the AMS to the buffer by pushing filament in the tube manuallt in various positions of the AMS. There are chances that filament diameter is not strictly accurate, but slightly bigger and cause more friction than usual if the bend of tube is a bit sharp. Or it is slightly smaller and cause a slip at extruder gear.

Normally the location of AMS doesn’t matter as long as there is not much resistance on the PTFE pathway.

Like I said, there is not really a clog. The unit states that there is a clog and there is no extrusion. The AMS tries multiple times to load the filament without success. If I move the AMS next to the machine, and restart, all works well.

And that is why I’m reaching out to the forum. I’ve been printing for a few years now and can solve a number of issues easily. This is a peculiar one and that is why I reached out to the forum.

I have the same issue. I have done only one print with 4 Colors with my AMS pro 2 while the AMS sit on top of the printer. I saw no major kicks in the tubes but they are indeed quite long. I will try with the AMS on the side instead the top.

Any results from your tests?

Funnily enough, irrespective of the slot location of the filament, feeding does not work past the 4 to 1 point in the AMS2 with the unit off. If the filament is loaded by the machine, it seems to load well.
