AMS Spool Lifting and Binding

Setup:

· Bambu P1S with original AMS and 0.2 mm nozzle.

· SunLu PLA on plastic spool (near identical to Bambu spool)

· Approx. 75% of the PLA material on the spool (material days old, environment <50% humidity)

· Spool in position #2.

· This printer is at a location that does not allow it to run on the network. It has no app connectivity.

Print:

This is a small keychain in two colors printing a QR on the build plate. It prints one with no issue. This print is x34 completely filling the plate. The error occurred halfway through the first layer on the first color.

Issue:

The print stopped and the material appears to be pulled extremely tight. When I lift the spool it reseats but immediately pulls tight again lifting the spool toward the front of the AMS. The #2 AMS input is slow flashing red, which makes sense. There is no binding in the spool. The filament is completely free to move. I put weight inside the spool in an attempt to keep it seated. This did not work. I’m having a very difficult time trying to unload the material from the printer.

Follow up:

I had to cancel the print and tear into it manually. The material was very difficult to get through the PTFE tube. When removed, it looked like it was the melted diameter of the nozzle throat. I was able to load new material and get it functioning. My best guess is the 0.2 nozzle was a very slow flow and heat the material began to soften prior to entering the nozzle.

I am attempting a new run to see if this happens again. I am very curious what experiences others have had in this sort of situation?

Re: heat clog, .2mm nozzle at low speeds (first layer) can lead to heat creep clogs if your venting and cooling aren’t very good. Most machines hate under 1mm3 flow for extended periods of time. Take the top glass off or use a riser, and keep the door open.

Re: spool hopping

The joy of rollers. Do make sure there isn’t a legit knot. If not, There are 3 things commonly done: rims for the spool, to increase contact area. Spool weights to insert into the core to give it more mass. There is also a “ams lid wedge riser" if you suspect the spool is rubbing on top as well when it shouldn’t.

You can also give up and respool onto a Bambu one with a power drill attachment lol. The thing is real picky
