AMS Unit Can't Unload and Pull Back Filament

I have been using my AMS for over 6 months and it’s been pretty reliable so far. Recently I noticed problems in loading filament where one slot would make a grinding noise and it struggled to load filament so I moved the filament to another slot and that seemed to solve the problem or so I thought.

A week later the printer was unable to unload the filament from the alternative 2nd slot and couldn’t retract the filament. It tried to and the reel just wouldn’t move past a half turn. I assumed the filament wasn’t cut and was still stuck in the extruder but on inspection the filament had been cut and moved out of the extruder. I had to dissaemble the AMS from the printer do a manual cut and pull back the filament myself. I then stripped the AMS down assuming it might be a broken bit of filament in the tubing but nothing there. I then checked the back where the 4 tubes combine into one next to the rear motor thinking the motor is possibly to blame. I put the AMS partly back so I could still see the motor and cog running. It loaded the filament but it still struggled and made really hard work of it. I got the AMS to finally unload the filament but there’s definitely something not right with it.

Anyone else experienced the same problem? and if so did this involve replacing that part at the back which feeds the 4 tubes into 1? could it be a rear motor issue as the other AMS slots are experiencing the same issue.

The good thing is the AMS is fairly easy to repair, but I’ve read on these forums to stay away from the magnets in the AMS filament hub, basically don’t do any of this: Remove and install the magnets in AMS filaments hub | Bambu Lab Wiki

Come back to us with your results if you need additional help, ultimately though, you’ll have to determine and fix the issue yourself, other users that have experienced the same issue you’re experiencing might chime in later.

If you look in the two first stage feeders that are having trouble can you see filament dust? How does the metal gear look?

Take a look at the spool rollers too, sometimes one of them goes out of place.

Hi. ok thanks for the helpful feedback. Ive taken apart the AMS and can confirm no broken bits of filament in the tubes and ran some small filament through the first stage feeders. Ive also checked the first stage feeders and they look o.k. and again nothing to suggest this is the problem. What’s odd is it does sometimes pull back but regardless of what first stage feeder is used the same problem occurs. Filament now appears to load fine. I have also changed the grey filament buffer on the back of the printer as I was using a 4 way splitter so it’s back to a single one. Im now suspecting it’s the AMS Internal Hub Unit as that’s the only likely cause left.

From what ive read the advice is NOT to open it? as it causes springs and magnets to go flying??

Im wondering could there be something stuck in there OR could it be the motor attached to it. From what I can gather though when inspecting it when it loads filament I can see the motor turning fine although unloading might be a different issue if the motor is going in reverse? Im assuming though that the motor is working fine so back to the AMS internal hub.

I guess the only solution is to buy a replacement AMS internal hub unit but looking at the spare parts its £50! Is it an easy job to replace this and re-attach the motor and cog wheel?

I think I found the issue. I replaced the 4 way grey filament splitter at the rear of the printer with a standard one and it may have been this all along. The AMS seems to be fine and is now retracting filament.

Was it the AMS Hub?

No don’t think so as it all checked out. I had a 4 way grey filament splitter on the back which I used at some point to connect two AMS units. As soon as I removed this and replaced it no more issues.
