First thing I spotted is about not using glue on PLA with textured PEI. I do it routinely now.
Been doing some lightbox lenses with lots of fine detail and liquid glue is the only way I get it to all stay stuck down on that critical first layer. My textured PEI plate was running out of adhesion so I tried it and it works great. I run water on the plate when separating and it helps get the print off without damage to print or plate.
YMMV but Bambuās liquid glue on textured PEI works great for me and doesnāt interfere with the surface texturing.
One thing I notice is the wording. It looks like it might be referring to glue stick and nope, I wouldnāt use glue stick on textured PEI. Someone here did mention using it though but they also warmed the build plate to liquify the glue and then spread it into a thin film across the plate. I havenāt tried that but they said it worked great.
One other thing is a general comment on AI - be careful asking it things where there is lots of misinformation or differences of opinion. Itās not truly thinking so doesnāt have much to help it weed out bad information. If you are strong in some technical area you can also test it to see how it does.
What Iāve found is the deeper you go in the weeds the more likely it is to get things wrong. The more differences of opinion there are, the more likely it will just give you opinion instead of facts. It can do some cool things but people should never take what it says as gospel. AI hallucinates and even lies. It can leave words like ānotā out accidentally which can flip meanings 180.
Itās cool and can frequently give good answers but as more use it for more things, Iām afraid weāre going to see more catastrophic events traced back to AI. This obviously isnāt like considerations for wing spars in jumbo jets but the likelihood of bad information is likely fairly similar.
To be honest, I have been printing PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA(-CF), TPU, PA6-CF, PPA-CF, PET-CF and PAHT-CF all on Textured or Smooth PEI without the use of any glue.
PA6-CF didnāt like the Smooth PEI, but works fine on Textured PEI.
I clean my plates once and a while with dish soap, and sometimes use IPA to clean them.
IPA is also great to remove TPU from the build plate. Just put some drops on the plate against the part and it almost automatically releases the part.
If I can avoid glue, I will. I donāt like the mess and the extra work around it.
A new PEI plate is great - everything sticks and it slides off when the plate cools.
The textured PEI plate I was referring to is a year and a half old (almost 2) and had been set aside because some bits were no longer sticking and could even get dragged around on the plate. I decided to try the liquid glue since the plate was essentially dead and it worked great. That plate is back in rotation and routinely used where before it was headed to the bin.
It apparently depends on how you do things. I also clean with soap and warm water and got a lot of mileage out it already.
For long/critical prints Iāve seen enough failures when things donāt stick that I reach for the stick or liquid as a safety belt to make sure adhesion doesnāt affect a print. Yeah, there are times I donāt need to, donāt use glue, and still get perfect prints, but glue pretty well guarantees Iām going to get a good print.
My PEI plates are not that old yet. Mine are about half a year old now. But I treat them with care.
My experience might change over time.
On my Voron I used 1 Smooth PEI for all my PLA, PETG, ABS and ASA prints, and only needed painters tape to keep eSun PA6-CF on the plate. I never used glue on my Voron.
I am also sure that different filament brands also require different build plate treatments.
And thereās the big one - differences. Different filaments, different moisture contents in filaments, different plates, different room temperatures and humidities, different age and use history plates, etc. Thereās a lot of things that can cause different results. Printing parameters are probably also big factors.
