I printed this box on my P1S. I used PolyTerra Earth Brown, which I have used many times before to print similar boxes. However, all of a sudden my prints show an artifact (see picture). It seems to be vertical ringing or something. Does anyone know what causes this artifact and how I can fix it?
I am already printing quite slow 120 /150 inner/outer wall speed. I used a line width of 0.49. It does not seem to show on the front and right side, but more so on the left and bach side of the print.
Is this where your seam is lined up?
Yes, on both surfaces next to the seam.
Have you done a pressure advance calibration lately?
I tried, but this feature does not seem to be affected by pressure advance…
it is probably a cooling thing.
I think what is happening is it is taking longer to print that layer because of the inside geometry. And the fan is blowing on the one side cooling that side. I am guessing that it is what direction the wind is blowing. (seriously, the weather) Why it printed with the same setting for different ambient temperature, humidity, … but does not print the same now. True modern printers are much better than their predecessors at accounting for the variables. But in an effort to keep costs down they skimp on chamber temperature control.
Some suggestions to solve it:
minimize the print temperature, This minimizes the cool down.
turn off the chamber fan. maybe for just the layer that is a problem.
keep the door open. Maybe the opposite, keep it closed. Trying to keep it the same temperature for the entire print. In particular the cooled layer that you are laying the next layer on the same for all layers.
In extrema cases I have put a large cardboard box over the entire printer to minimize cooling through the printer walls. This is a problem cooling the circuitry of the printer.
It is hard to totally get rid of the issue. But not hard to get it to an acceptable level. Assuming it is what I think it is.
If you are referring to the “sawtooth waves” on the flat side of your print - this is called ringing or ghosting, its the teeth of your XY belt’s resonance showing thru. Do calibration from the printers LCD. [input shaping] If this doesnt address it, slow down your jerk and accelerations. Speed[velocity] isnt actually all that important.
If you are referring to the rather open looking seam on the right - Check your seam gap setting, and your pressure advance to maybe tighten that up a bit but its ok for an obtuse corner
If you are referring to the shadow line near the very bottom thats a “benchy hull line” which is a cooling/contracting issue based on how layer times just take different amounts of time. This is harder to get rid of quickly, and if you google that, you can find lots of info. Geometry can help fix it, as can tuning speeds to get your layer time more consistant.
