Printing a fuselage and am running into this problem. Happens with ASA Aero and Polymer LW PLA. Wherever there is an overhang of about 45 degrees I’m getting this separation. Single wall, 3% infill. Any advice? Much appreciated!
But what about here, where there is no overhang?
Look at the sliced model view that shows speed. Is there something different about these areas? It looks like a flow problem, but I can’t easily imagine one that’d care about the overhang. And even if it did, why does it continue through most of the layer as seen on the right side? Weird.
You’re slowing down and maybe cranking up the part cooling fan, so maybe extrusion temp? Bump it up 10 degrees and see if that makes a difference.
Or maybe lower the max flow in the filament profile.
Alternately, you could make a test object with features that mimic the fuselage problem areas and try and fix it with that so you’re not wasting a huge amount of filament and time with each iteration.
Thanks for the reply. That area did have an overhang on the other side, just didn’t capture it in the photo. You’re thinking the same as me. I printed a test part I made in fusion with different overhang angles and it printed fine. I checked in the slicer and found the flow, speed, layer time and fan speed were different in those areas. It almost looked like too much cooling right after the overhang or under extrusion. The Poly LW PLA I think is pre foamed so not sure what too much cooling would do to it.
Neither am I, but I suspect the filament continues to foam a little after it’s been extruded, until it’s cooled down some, so if you’re blowing on it too hard it cools off before it’s done foaming and that behaves like under-extrusion.
I’ll try reduce or turn off some cooling to see what happens. Thanks again for the input.
For this foaming stuff, I imagine getting a constant speed and as near to zero retraction/travels is of great importance in making it look even. It looks like it loses pressure, and is unable to get it back again because of the mad science happening inside the nozzle with the blowing agent.
I’d try on a smaller cut-down test piece what it looks like if you disable the various “slowdown-for-overhangs” settings.. KNowing that the overhang may look a little sloppier/less tight but that it wont tear out the wall.
