My wife is very conscious of the smells Asa puts off. My printer is in the office and when I print Asa I just close the door until it’s finished.
Questions.
Is it safe to walk into the room say a half hour after print is done? I’m thinking maybe the vocs dropped to the floor are aren’t in the air anymore. Vacuum cleaner has hepa filter
Can I just buy an expensive air purifier and change filters when needed? If so, what exactly do I need when looking for air purifier? Lots of choices and sky’s the limit.
I have searched the h2 series here on the site and have found a lot of stuff I didn’t understand with a bunch of voc numbers that just went over my head. Do I need a voc meter? One thread had many who seemed to be using them.
I grow tent and venting to the outside is not an option for me if I want to keep my printer in the house and still stay married. PETG has been my go to, but I have the need to print Asa and can’t always wait for her to be gone for hours.

If you’re in the room all the time, and you’re printing ASA all the time, you’d want to ventilate or filter. But if you’re only printing ASA occasionally, I wouldn’t worry about it.
There is no need to avoid going in to the room while a print is underway. If the gasses were anywhere near toxic enough for a short exposure to matter, the 3D printing world would be littered with the bodies of dead people. It’s long term exposure that matters.
HEPA won’t catch the VOCs. If you want to filter, you need a filter that is specifically designed to get VOCs. But if your office has a window (mine does), a small exhaust fan in the window will be sufficient (it’s what I do).
Worth adding, many other things in your life give off VOCs, including interior house paint, and carpeting, and all the plastics in your car’s interior that give it that new car smell. You’re constantly being exposed to VOCs in the ambient environment. Your printer’s contribution might amount to the equivalent of an extra gallon of water over Niagara Falls.

You’ll find lots of people with lots of opinions of many flavors on this one.
Direct ventilation is always going to score highest for safety, but these days I’m leaning towards adding activated charcoal to your space filtration somehow; and this can earn you occasional non-PLA printing. I’m regarding PLA as safe, I hope, lol.
I also use my printers in the house, but mainly just PLA or PETG.

I learned the hard way that ASA and studio apartments don’t mix. My IQAir AirVisual Pro basically gave up on life during the very first print. My apartment which serves as my office, bedroom, kitchen and spa became a red zone instantly. Even with my HealthPro 250 cranked to setting 4 the smell was aggressive enough to clear out my sinuses and apparently my hair follicles too! It felt like I was sharing the room with a very toxic chemical ghoul.
Different people have different levels of sensitivity to odors. I smoke cigars and love the smell. The smell makes my wife nauseous.
For what it is worth, I have an H2C and when I print ABS, I still struggle with smells. There are things I have done that have definitely helped though!
I have a vent going to the outside as well as the Gcode edits to create a slight negative pressure with the top vent and rear exhaust opening. This definitely does help but doesn’t eliminate the odors - it is nice though that I haven’t seen any issue with chamber temps doing this. That being said, do you think you could possibly hook up a very short hose and connect it to some kind of makeshift carbon and HEPA filter? Maybe you could even directly attach it to the exhaust. Combine that with the slight negative pressure and I think it will definitely help, but not eliminate the smells. Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe even with the filters, some VOCs are still going to come out due to the small particles.
I also have the smoke extractor which I don’t turn on during ABS but for testing, I put it on the lowest setting. It did help, but even on low I noticed the chamber temps started to dip. I’ll perform another test and watch it over the course of an hour or two as I only did it briefly. At the time I believe I saw a -5C dip.
There are some things I am going to try and will report back on if you want to try as well.

Print a poop chute but ensure every bit of it is sealed. I know with the negative pressure, less is probably coming out, but with that big opening in the back, I do think it’s contributing some as the smell is much more prominent coming from behind the printer.

On top of all this, maybe have a small external air filter running by the printer - it can’t hurt and you can keep it in a relatively small form factor. I believe some have already shared some options for these in this thread.
Good luck on this mission! I’m determined to make it almost odor free - I know odor free doesn’t necessarily mean VOC free, but it would be a large improvement. Sorry in advance if people have already mentioned all of this, but I wanted to share my thoughts and plans. Since you mentioned using ASA, I’m hopeful if my ideas help a lot for ABS, it would be even bigger for you with ASA having less odors. However correct me if I’m wrong, while odor is better with ASA, I think it releases more ultrafine particles than ABS that are trickier to catch?

I realized I went on a tangent about odors primarily when your original question was about safety, haha. I apologize I got wrapped up in my own mission. I will say I think all of the ideas I mentioned will absolutely help for VOCs, probably just won’t eliminate them.
When you print ASA (or ABS), the H2C fires up the chamber heater. The rear vent and the front/top vent are closed. If you have an exhaust hose on the rear vent, it’ll pull air through the louvers, which will pull air in around the front door seams, and you’ll be defeating the purpose of having a heated chamber, which you have already seen with the -5ºC results. But it’s not just the temperature drop, it’s where the cold air is getting in and where it’s going. The chamber could be much colder where the air is leaking in, and a print will warp if it’s exposed to that airflow.
You have the extractor for lasering. How well does it work when you’re doing that? Plenty of laser users have posted about the ventilation not being as effective as they’d like. If it’s not fully effective for the laser, it won’t be for the filament VOCs either.
If the smell is really a problem for you (vs. a perceived problem), you only have two workable solutions - put the printer someplace else or enclose the printer in a secondary enclosure and run that at slightly negative pressure with an exhaust to the outside, so it captures whatever leaks out of the printer.
