ASA warping ideas-

Been trying to print a few larger ASA prints- And seem to be struggling with the bed plate lifting/warping print.

I’m mostly interested in how best to modify the part itself to reduce the warping stresses, I think I’ve read all other ideas/techniques and am trying/ or have tried. I’m not 100% on if the cooling settings are the best- image attached below.

The print is firmly adhered, the smooth plate lifts from the magnetic plate itself.

I am preheating to 40c+

I ordered some Kapton tape to try. I do have some flexibility in the design of the parts themselves, As it is, the bottoms (on the build plate as shown) are solid. Would removing material at the base- adding pockets or such, reduce the amount of cooling/warping forces?

The other half of this print is larger, and printed without noticeable warping- So I thought it was the design of the part adding to the stresses.I tried adding material at first (the base was thinner in Z than the other part that printed relatively well)- thinking it would retain more heat but it still pulled the plate.

Have you tried rotating the part 45 degrees on the bed so it’s diagonal, corner to corner? With will give the plate a substantial larger magnetic surface to hold too.

How much infill are you using?

Well, not diagonal- I did try 90 degs, and then off to one side a bit, with the thought of preventing the pull on the plate in the same area.

Infill was 15% with Gyroid for all attempts I believe.

Heres images of the part that did not seem to warp/atleast a noticeable amount.

Now that I look at it in comparison, while it is “thicker” at the base, the large cutouts do remove quite a bit of material in the lower levels of the print. I assume this is the reason it seems to print with less warpage right?

The hole cutouts/reliefs substantially reduce the shrinking/warping forces in that part.

Maybe Ill try remodeling the other part to have similar reliefs and see how it goes.

Thanks, The vid pointed at what I was after, I’m going to try that and see what happens.

I’m guessing as shown, the part will still warp above the reliefs, .250" or so above the build plate, but it likely won’t pull the build plate, instead distorting the part further up that won’t be as noticeable. Will try it and see.

Bummer, the result seemed about the same as not adding the reliefs.

I’ll have to give this some more thought. The big issue is that the build plate sides of each part are where they join together. Maybe I need to rethink how I’m orienting them.

I seem to have eliminated warping with ASA prints by doing the following:

Scrub the build plate (smooth PEI or textured PEI) with washing up liquid (dish soap) & a small amount of warm water & a nylon scourer, & dry thoroughly with a clean cloth. Then wipe with isopropyl alcohol.

Use an 8mm brim or mouse ears;

Heat the build plate to 105°C & keep it there for the entire print;

Don’t start printing unless the chamber temperature is >=40°C (50°C is better).
