Attack of The Blob

Weird failure last night, and I’m hoping somebody can help me troubleshoot.

Bambu P1S, 0.2mm Nozzle

The print itself is something I’ve printed many times, using settings that I’ve used over 50 times. The printer did the prime line without issue, but there was some kind of failure with the prime tower (which was supposed to be back left). It’s like something stuck, and then everything else just melted in place.

Fortunately I caught it both times - yep, it failed the same way twice in a row. The build plate was cleaned with Dawn detergent and then 99% alcohol, just like I always do. Automatic plate leveling run was done successfully on both prints.

Just in case it’s confusing - the build plate is in good shape - the weird line at far right is just a shadow.

It seems like your nozzle could be clogged. I would try a cold pull on it. Filament debris inside the nozzle is preventing the filament to come out smoothly which causes the blob. (Also, are you sure your silicone sock is on straight? In the picture it looks crooked)

Not as weird as you think.

You either have or have had (have had had have?) a partial clog. It was enough to cause a headache of a booger on the purge tower and then lucky you, it pretty much stopped everything up.

The good news is it’s an easy(ish) fix and EVERYBODY GET’S TO HAVE ONE! Seriously it’s a rite of passage for 3d printing.

Heat up the nozzle and that blob should come off. It may have come off with the sock. Doesn’t look like it’s bad enough to take anything sensitive with it.

You have a few choices now. You can try to run some filament through it to see if it’s still clogged. It may have pushed past. There are ways of clearing a partial, like just using a 1.5 mm LONG hex wrench down through the extruder and then into the nozzle to force some out. You can skip the extruder by unscrewing the nozzle and leaving it plugged into the board. Set the temp to 160-180 and then push the hex wrench through. I shouldn’t have to say this but it will be hot. Act accordingly.

If you print in a room that’s a little warm and you leave the top and door closed you’ll get heat creep that will cause this. Cheap filament will do it, wet filament will do it. It happens, so don’t sweat it.

@Beginningprints @R3d-Five I want to thank both of you for responding. The issue is now resolved.

I’ve actually dealt with clogs a lot during my year and a half of serious 3d printing, and this wasn’t it - which is good, because nozzle clogs with the 0.2mm are particularly hard to clear. In fact, there was one so bad I just replaced the nozzle - after all, they aren’t that expensive.

I heated up the nozzle and gave it a thorough cleaning, and then noticed that the sock itself was very worn (it’s probably the original one that came on this hotend). I gave the build plate a thorough cleaning and also put on a new sock, and it’s now printing beautifully again.
