Bambu Studio has a ‘Variable Layer Hight’ control to configure layer height based on slope of the object.
It would be great if there was also a ‘Variable Infill density’ control based on slope as well.
I believe Simplfy3D has (had?) this setting. You could specify the minimum infill density and the max and the slicer would adjust it automatically so that top layers got the maximum support for a smooth finish, while the body of the print got the minimum to save on filament and print time.
I realize you can do this manually with modifiers, its just a major pain to do so and a tool to set this and apply automatically would be really nice.
I’d like to add some technical support to this suggestion, because variable sparse infill density would solve a very real problem for engineering‑grade materials.
Right now, low‑density infill (like 5% gyroid) creates very large internal spans. When the slicer generates the top solid layers, it has to bridge across those spans. For materials like PETG, PETG‑CF, ASA, and even TPU, this causes:
long bridging distances
aggressive flow reduction during bridging
large pressure drops in the melt zone
stringing or artifacts on the layer immediately after the bridge
top‑surface ripples or sagging
The only current workaround is to increase infill density for the entire print, which wastes material and increases print time even though only the top few millimeters actually need the extra support.
A variable infill feature — even something simple like “Top Support Boost” — would allow:
low infill in the middle of the part
higher infill only near the top (and optionally bottom)
shorter bridging spans
cleaner top surfaces
reduced post‑bridge stringing
less material usage
faster prints
This is already a standard feature in several industrial slicers, and it would be extremely useful in Bambu Studio, especially for users printing PETG‑CF or other engineering filaments where bridging behavior is sensitive to chamber temperature and pressure transitions.
Modifiers can do this manually, but it’s tedious and error‑prone.
A built‑in variable sparse infill option would make the workflow much smoother.
