AUX, Exhaust, Part Fans causing higher power consumption vs. X1C

So I’ve recently acquired an X2D after several years with an X1Cs.

Doing the same PETG prints I’m noticing an additional 100w power consumption: ~170w vs ~70w.

I’m putting it down to the all the extra fans running sucking in fresh air and causing the chamber to cool the bed.

I’ve tried to disable the AUX and Exhaust fan using the printer (active filtration) and filament settings (aux fan speed 0% after layer 1 and 2) in Bambu Studio, but I’m still seeing them switch on when I’m printing. When I stop them on via the touchscreen on the printer, they seem to come back on again at some point during the print.

In addition to the extra power usage I’m also getting warping of large parts from the AUX fans specifically.

How can we turn all these extra fans off? I don’t want deflectors or hacks, I just need a tried and tested way to turn them off. It feels almost like the firmware is overriding the slicer. Is fan speed 0% even turning them off? Even running them at 1% is wasteful from a power-saving point of view to me.

The warping and power consumption are ruining any chance of me actually liking this thing.

I don’t have power consumption to compare but I’m also having the issue where I set the aux fan speed on both the printer and filament settings and the X2D seems to override these settings at some point. I was completing a print last night and I had the filament settings so that the aux fans were off for the first 5 layers and then maxed at 20% thereafter. I check on the print a little while later and both aux fans are on at 70% (even went up to 80% at one point). I adjusted them on the printer, but as soon as it switched nozzles then it would go right back to 70-80%. I’ve had better luck with the chamber exhaust sticking to where I have it set. Very frustrating.

I need to vent some more gripes vs. the X1C:

  • Hotend fans are loud, like my bearing is going to fail, loud. Much worse than either of my previous X1C hotend fan, just so whiney. Cheap fans, can I find better replacements?

  • The calibration line leads to a blob with PETG which ruins very first part of my prints. I am looking to make it go back over itself with gcode to fix this, hopefully the blob will attach to the calibration line. Feels like I’m back on a Voron tweaking this

  • I’m doing flow control manually now, turns out a lidar is actually very useful and does save time

  • The anti-vibration feet are causing my shelving to shake, will be printing solid TPU feet as this wasn’t an issue before. The printer swaying is not desirable

  • The stepper motors are louder than the X1C

  • The bed camera and LED needs to be on to read the QR code of the bedplate. I had to print larger QR codes to attach to my old plates to get them to read because of this, X1C used a camera near the hotend

  • Turning off the chamber light also disables the hotend light. Previously it left this on an there was plenty of light to still see the print through the camera without lighting up the room. Would be nice to have this option still

  • I can’t use home assistant to control the printer anymore, the firmware is locked down to only be able to turn the light on and off

So many nice improvements but it’s just not the same polished product as before.

The fan speed issues are the biggest for now, I can’t seem to turn them off with gcode either.

For me, as it stands, this has been a downgrade. I’m happy to put the work in to improve/fix things but Bambu Lab will need to do the same.

The low price has to show somewhere. X1c combo was 1400+ when launched, this is 850. The x2d sounds somewhat same as p2s.

Yeah, I fully agree with why it’s happend.

Like manufacturers of everything nowadays (for example chocolate bar ingredients; less cocoa and milk solids replaced with more sugar and palm oil), they seem to have made a product that on paper is the same or better. But the cost cutting when you’ve had the previous product is clear.

Given this was supposed to be a successor to the X1, I’d have paid more to keep the level of refinement and standards previously set in addition to having the upgrades provided.

The price and the added features are the headline. I certainly purchased because of it. I’d just like to document that for me it’s not the level of refinement I’ve been used to with Bambu.

Not only high power consumption, but like many others have noted, no ability to control the aux fans. So frustrating. I have a large PETG print that I’ve always printed flawlessly on my 10 other printers (P1S and X1C), but I’ve wasted over 1kg filament trying to get it to print well on the X2D.

Spent yet more time on this today, admittedly less than I’d like as I’m busy and I hadn’t planned for the trouble this new machine would cause.

I seem to be getting a pause before the very first part of my print starts, after the move but before the extrude. I can’t seem to stop this happening with start gcode (printer or filament). Currently the first part of my print is ruined by this as I need the first layer to be perfect. I guess a skirt would mitigate this issue, however I’ve not needed one since having an Ender 3 and it means not using the entire build plate for parts.

Filament seems to be severely under extruded, increasing the flow ratio makes this worse. I haven’t had time to touch volumetric flow its still set to 12 which is the generic PETG profile default that works fine on my X1C. This is still first layer, I don’t want to waste reels of filament.

The fans still have a mind of their own. There are other threads on this now.

Hopefully a firmware or slicer update comes along soon and fixes these issues.

I think the bed heater is bigger and pulls more current to maintain bed temperature than an X1C. There may be other contributors too like dual extruders with one at least being held at idle when not being used. I’d be surprised if fans made that big a difference but don’t have an X2D to know.

Its not the fans themselves, but the unwanted cold airflow they causeover the bed from not being able to turn them fully off. They just keep coming back on by themselves.

The AMS 2 Pro is about 7 watts extra over the AMS according to the specs. I’ve got the X2D combo down to about 15-20w extra now which isn’t the end of the world but that’s only when the aux and exhaust behave and the chamber stays warm naturally from the bed heat.

For print farms this could be a big deal.

The auxiliary fans set their own speed regardles of what the slicer sets. I set them to 30% and they immediatelly go back to 80 or 90%. This causes wild warping on small details. This is embarassing.

It appears that the firmware has different fan speeds for purging and prime tower, which overrides the manual setting on every colour change.

I’ve just had an error due to foriegn object detection, essentially the hotend seems to have oozed a blob of PETG large enough to trigger it. Why, no idea, flow rate is hard to get right on this thing.

OK, fine, so the printer paused and alerted me. Good so far. I then remove the offending blob and hit resume. The printer then proceeds to run though a build plate alignment and tries to bed level, melting through the print before failing… WTF?! Why is it doing this?!! Just resume from the place you stopped, this is a common procedure I’ve been through numerous times with the X1C.

I actually feel like a beta tester at this point. There is no way this firmware is fully tested, surely it’s a big rush job due to the U1.

I tried turning off the fans with the filament gcode, but yet to try your machine gcode.

I honestly had hoped to avoid messing with the machine gcode altogether (zero times on the X1). Alas I’ve already messed with it for the fans issues and other reasons (bed height, prime line, long pause after calibration line), so I’ll be trying it out tomorrow.

I can’t be running this printer overnight as I simply don’t trust it enough and the time I can spend messing with it during the evening is very limited.

Both approaches work fine, but when using filament code you don’t have control through the screen, so you need to be careful.

All the machine code really does is comment out the auto-cooling—it doesn’t introduce anything special. It essentially brings the printer back to its native behavior. I think Bambu implemented the filament and layer-change hooks mainly so users could customize things further to suit their needs. Those two options are incredibly powerful—there’s a lot you can do with them. Honestly, almost anything is possible.

The X1 didn’t have all of these options. The X2D is much more advanced in this regard. People often complain that Bambu doesn’t allow much modification, but if you understand G-code, you can now do pretty much anything.

The example in my post simply comments out the auto-cooling, which normally triggers at certain temperature thresholds during each layer change and filament change.

Filament gcode isn’t enough as in the error scenario yesterday they came back on.

Its nice of you to have put a solution and I’ll be happy to give it a go later. However I expected more of Bambu, the additional features clearly aren’t fully thought through and there are gaps based on common use cases. I went Bambu originally to avoid messing with settings, this is the first printer that hasn’t given me good results out of the box. I am also dubious of editing machine gcode as it has the potential to cause damage as now I have to think about all the different scenarios.
