'Avoid crossing walls.'

Hey all,

I’ve designed this part, it’s a battery pack which has a LiPo battery/BMS and 2 micro connectors placed into the print at around 33% complete by layer height.
Unfortunately, it insists on making a singular travel move across the large internal compartment at about half way through the print, even though I have done everything I can to prevent it crossing walls, and made the max detour length 1000mm. (See photo below/red arrows).

As you can imagine, a hot nozzle crashing into a LiPo cell would make for an interesting live camera stream…lol…

Any tricks here?

I feel that the Bambu software is definitely lagging behind the capability of the machines thus far.

Sounds like you want more of a “no go” zone after a certain layer… not aware of such a feature in Studio (sounds vaguely familiar though, likely from reading something in past times). I can’t tell what it’s doing from the screenshot, but in general seems like in some cases it could traverse the open area w/out crossing any walls in the first place. Plus crossing may be inevitable in other cases.

I thought, perhaps naively, that embedded objects had to be placed so they’re below the current print layer. Seems like a safer way to go, anyway.

Personally I wouldn’t want a LiPo cell anywhere close to a fast-moving sharp hot nozzle. Or embedded in a case (keep in mind they may swell even if not defective). But that’s just me! :slight_smile:

I’m not worried about the travel moves crossing the compartment BEFORE the part placement. It can go to town there for all I care.
It’s just the one, singular travel move AFTER the part placement, that I have highlighted which is a no go for printing. If I print at 0.08mm layer height, there is approx. 50 layers printed AFTER the part placement, and during just ONE of those 50 layers, it decides to cross the forbidden zone…lol.

Originally I printed the model flipped upside down, which made it easy to add the parts just before the last 5 layers, which worked, but it required lost of supports and I wasn’t 100% happy with the final print results. Printing in this orientation is much more efficient for small scale production.

The total Z height of this model is only 7.0mm. I checked with a test shell print, and found that the chamfer of the nozzle and chamfer of the LiPo cell give plenty of clearance. Think of the shell as 3D printed heat-shrink, but in a nicer shape.

Update:

After trying modifiers, changing seam orientation etc, in the end experimenting with layer heights eventually made the travel moves avoid the forbidden zone…I feel like this is a bug as it limits me to specific layer height…

Why not have it pause just before the “closing up” layer, insert the components, then resume the print?

The closing up layer for the 2 connectors is about 1/3 of the total Z height, and the closing up layer for the battery is at the end, but all 3 items are pre soldered before the print and dropped in at the same time. When I originally designed this, it printed upside down, so everything could be placed at the last ‘closing up’ layer, but it required supports…But I decided to flip it over to eliminate supports and to get a better finish on the side that will be seen.
