So We print with ABS 99% of the time on our printers at work. I was using a bunch of Hatchbox stuff as wella s random no-name spools I’ve had for quite a while. No issues until we started printing with Bambu black ABS. Now the glass is getting a residue on it. These images are after a single 7.5 hour print where I had just cleaned all the glass with alcohol prior to the print. Any ideas?
I think something else in bambu black filaments is off gassing. Even the bambu black pla has a particularly strong odour not present in lighter colours. The glass residue needs dish soap to really get it off.
That seems to track. The Hatchbox was all white, a no-name of a pinkish purple as well as both yellow and black Polymaker PolyLite ABS that never did this.
We do have an exhaust system in the machine shop where the printer is, I’m going to print one of those exhaust ducts and plumb it into the system with a gate valve.
Just need to stop printing functional parts for work so I can print it lol
This is normal when printing Bambu ABS. I pretty much print this exclusively and have to clean the windows every so often with window cleaner.
I have noticed the same with black Bambu ASA. I have not noticed it with Bambu black PLA or any other black filaments PETG or TPU.
Same here. It’s been like this since before the H series. I remember both my P units needing to clean the glass with ABS.
And now that I think of it, I only, since owning the H units began using Bambu ABS, so it’s not only Bambu filaments. Given, I’ve noticed more “smoke” coming from the Bambu filament when it’s being extruded quickly(during purging), and the Bambu smells stronger(to me), and I have to leave the room pretty much instantly. But the dirty glass, that’s been there for a very long time with ABS filaments…

Off-gassing is actually a general term that is not restricted to manufactured items.

Outgassing (sometimes called offgassing, particularly when in reference to indoor air quality) is the release of a gas that was dissolved, trapped, frozen, or absorbed in some material.
Apart from that, if the filament has been heated and extruded from the nozzle, has it not been printed?

Strange that I printed for dozens of hours with nothing but ABS on this printer and never had any haze on the glass until using the Bambu black ABS.
That is indeed strange. I just know that it’s pretty much part of my regular maintenance to clean the glass, cameras, and has been for a very long time.
The funny thing is that I don’t worry about the top glass, on these or the previous units. I have always had 2 AMS units(one on each printer) on top. Additionally to that now, the side windows. I clean the right side windows, but the left, just forget it!
I don’t know how’s it’s escaped you that long, but I’d consider it a blessing… And somewhat of a fluke… The stuff is nasty… Plain and simple… And people want to make and play with their own filters… You go right ahead! Not here! This alone is why I don’t mess around, and vent that stuff out the house! It’s nothing to play around with…

That haze is possibly a very bad thing to be exposed to. When cleaning it, folks may even want to wear gloves while wiping it down.
It could be any number of things too. It’s not unheard of to dispose of really nasty chemical waste (that would be expensive to dispose of properly) by adding it to various process streams to get rid of it without consideration to who it may affect later. This really does happen in the chemical product industry.
And I’m not accusing anyone of this. OP just mentioned cheap and no-name filaments and that end of markets are where activity like that tends to happen if it happens.
Most likely it’s high boiling solvents or degradation products depositing on the printer surfaces. Without knowing what it is or how much of a health risk it is, anyone printing filaments that do this should be careful to not breathe the fumes or touch the residues.
It’s easy to poo-poo these kinds of cautions and warnings when you’re young, but lose a few friends and relatives to likely chemically-caused health issues and the reasons to be careful get more clear. My brother-in-law was exposed to a number of chemicals in his job and got bladder cancer and weird dementia issues where he constantly was surrounded by lots of people whenever he was awake. It eventually killed him. You never know and it’s not guaranteed people will see health issues, but for those that do, by then you’re committed to whatever fate you chose.
Does the white abs do the same thing? I noticed my black Bambu ABS has strong fume, but not sure about the other color or other brands. Since it’s the first time I’m printing with abs, I thought that was normal…. Can someone else share their experience?
Yes, I’ve used white, black and yellow ABS from Bambu and they all do it. I have to wipe all the windows down after every few prints, even with positive ventilation through the printer itself.
