I just ran in to an interesting situation. I’m making a business card holder for dentists. To speed up printing, I thought it would be a good idea to Print By Object. That way it’s not swapping colors between white and blue on every layer.
Problem is, when I add a logo, the base is now 3-color. If I printed it separately, it would create a Prime Tower, but when you print by object, it disables the prime tower.
- Wouldn’t it be okay to include a prime tower for the first object?
- Is that something that could come in the future if I request it?
- How necessary is the prime tower anyway?
Print by object introduces multiple limitations, some of which you may be unaware of.
We will take the one you highlighted.
The prime tower is not included because the software is not capable of calculating more than one for positioning.
The travel paths become more complicated as the towers may conflict with the models and their position in the object print queue.
This is clearly not unassailable, just more complicated and likely became a lower priority.
The other issue you may not be aware of is your model profile likely will not work with the A series, my guess is you have a P or X series.
There are two limitations here:
- The A series has a much lower max height for the objects due to the height of the arm the x-axis travels on, no model can exceed this. This isn’t a limitation of the P & X series as they use a core x/y system that doesn’t have that arm.
- The automatic print profile creation will not generate compatible profiles for other printers as it is deemed “too complex” to calculate the model volume.
It was me that pushed for BL to use a model volume calculation to determine compatibility and then automatically generate compatible profiles.
However, they didn’t do this for any profiles that include at least one “print by object” as they believe those calculations are a step too far.
More annoying, they don’t even tell you the profile you assumed would generate profiles for each other printer are simply not created. You may not notice and limit your model exposure due to this.
