Bambu X2D Concerns

Just bought one a few days ago, I have other 3d printers from various vendors and have been 3d printing for 8 years. So far only problems I have is the usual textured bed adhesion, which to be honest I usually have issues with compared to smooth pei, but it shipped with it so I’ll make due. Othere than that I only wanted this version for the other nozzle option on some obscure needs I have. Otherwise I would of just got the A1 or maybe 2 of them. :wink:

X2D arrived yesterday. I have yet to get an acceptable print after many hours of trying, and it’s not just feed issues.

I do not have the AMS on this machine, and I found printing with the main spool on top just doesn’t work at all - filament stuck errors every time after just a few layers. Probably due to the friction of the PTFE tube on the filament spool. Moving the main down to the bottom seems to have helped, but I’ve run into what appears to be stepper issues - a large layer offset after about 20 layers, and another attempt into the trash.

I guess I’m going to have to try and cook up some sort of PTFE guide to stop the filament spool friction when using both main and aux extruders.

It sort of feels like maybe I have a defective machine?

Makes my X2C and A1 seem like a dream.

Update: Moving the top spool back a bit eliminates friction with the PTFE tube. Prints are ok for now. Silly design if you ask me.

I have the P1S combo and added a AMS2 Pro and now pushing over 1200 hours. Having problems with the AMS that came with the printer, but Bambu Labs has not stopped trying to fix it. Just started month five and can’t get enough. Thanks for your comment.

I’ve had it maybe 4 weeks now, migrating from an X1C, and honestly I’d wait — it’s very clunky right now. Here’s what I’ve experienced:

  1. PTFE & lid issue still not fixed. It’s far worse than what I had on the X1C, where the PTFE tube that enters the print head grinds against the top glass leaving lots of my prints speckled with white PTFE dots. BBL just says it’s a known issue and doesn’t affect print quality (it does, when there’s PTFE in your prints).

  2. Feeding issues. There seem to be a lot of these. There are comments about hub manufacturing problems in the AMS2s shipped as combos with the X2D. Motors don’t feed for any discernible reason (I have a ticket open right now). Some slots also seem to excessively grind filament on feed/retract with motor teeth causing the filament to no longer feed correctly

  3. Filament buffer issues. There’s a known firmware issue with the filament buffer spring potentially not being under enough tension for the right nozzle, causing feed failures mid-print. ETA for a fix is mid-June (from BBL). I’ve also had 4 or 5 desync errors between the printer and filament buffer, fixed only by restarting the printer.

All in all the features of the printer are a great upgrade over X1C but i have a lot of regret - i will no longer buy newly launched printers from BBL - i will wait at least a year as i dont like being a beta tester, it feels a bit like i bought a creality printer right now.

It definitely appears as if this was rushed to market. My hope is that Bambu Lab will keep addressing the bugs as quickly as possible. My recollection of following the X1C release was much smoother, but I didn’t actually get on board with the printer until some time afterward.

I think the X2D has a lot of potential, and I’m a little more cautiously optimistic.

Update on the X2D AMS 2 Pro Feeder issues. Support is sending me a replacement AMS 2 Pro Internal Hub Unit. For those with grinding/feeding issues, try and repro the issue in a slot that isnt slot 3. When the grinding/feed issue happens you will see a black lever at the point where the 4 PTFE tubes meet at the back of this slot. Push lever down and your filament will now feed. Seems there is a defect with the lever on the Hubs shipped with X2D AMS 2’s. Open a support ticket right away to get your replacement part.

Got my X2D a few weeks back (ams2 combi), very happy, but i do like to give review info without those rose tinted glasses.

The Pro’s:
I put in 8 months of work modding an Anycubic Mega-X, and the roughest default print setting on the X2D hands down smashed the full quality of my modded one.
Speed is great.
Movement noise is minimal (compared to old skool stuff) and the silent mode is brilliant.
Once built, setup to first print is no time at all.
Cosmetics can have this blend into your house a lot better.
Build quality feels very nice.
Love the magnetic plate (i had a fixed bed before).
Once you gather the general flow of things on the printer, it is very easy to source problems and problems are feed to you.
Built in mode to dry filament withint he printer (for when you dont have a dryer or AMS).
Community (where i deem the person not a competitor or idiot) is great. seem some real info that is netiher supporting or destroying, just genuinely useful information and people trying to work together and help each other.

Cons:
Build instructions are poor, and feel like they have been built by an AI. for example, it took me more time than i am willing to admit to figure out i was supposed to be putting the silica in that back part. a simple arrow on the instructions would have made this clear. right now, it isnt clear at all and infers too much. Thats fine if you are experienced, but if you are a newbie to 3d printing (which i believe is a targetted demographic for bambu), lack of clarity is likely to make you do something you shouldnt, or put you off entirely and return because bambu just made this simplified usage version (vs old style printers) back to the old complex guessing games which required knowledge. That is probably my biggest issue.
AMS cannot dry while printing due to lack of power supply. i think vs the cost to provide that, this was a miss by Bambu. not sure why you would take a linear approach to that, print or dry whilst working with 4 spools!?!?. i dont want to hold all printing because i need to dry 1 spool. @BambuLab Please, at least for future people look at that, and also please get more reasonable on the pricing for it too if you are going to continue to not provide it.
AMS2 has a known issue on the feeder and currently looks like it is a replacement part you have to change yourself as a fix (bambu send it to you from what i currently understand). Not ideal. actually the reason i signed up today as i need to log a support ticket for it.
No basic poop chute feels like a miss also.
Fan sounds to are louder than they should be. Some better fans that work like noctua would be a massive benefit here. Also, please note, silent mode does not manage the fan therefor does not reduce that sound.
Dont know if this one is just me and where i have stationed it, but crikey does the machine shake like ■■■■ in fast movements. feels like the rubber feet are too soft so is creating more bounce rather than stability (has not affected any printing though).
Doing the second calibration is not clear that it should be done. it does a calibration when you first do it, and that did well if i am fair, but i did later notice some flow issues and thats when i found out about the second calibration via the bambulabs software to address that.

Overall:
Great machine and very happy with it. genuinely very excited to get back to work on my projects after 2 years of downtime on my mega x.

I do think Bambu need to look at their cost saving vs value to customer though, e.g. basic poop chute, fans used, and psu for dryer in ams2. to my knowledge, none of these are overly expensive for bambu to put in.

If you are looking for a machine for your first, or even experienced and want somethign that works well and is at the top end performance of this budget range, this is your machine. it is genuinely a great machine. i would probably go as far as to say it would hold its own quality wise with machines that are much more expensive.

When you say a few months, how many months are you exactly implying? Right now, I am debating between H2D and X2D. The only reason stopping me from buying H2D is its size. X2D is perfect, but I think I will wait a bit more.

If I had to do this all over again I think I would have gone with the H2D. Reasons being:

  1. After rearranging a few things on the bench I believe the larger footprint would work for me. The X2D needs more rear end space than I first thought, whereas the H2D appears like the very things that hang off the back of the X2D are inside the H2D.
  2. The H2D is more mature and many early teething pains have already been worked out.
  3. Larger build volume.
  4. True dual nozzles.
  5. Slightly better print quality.
  6. 350°C nozzles.

Some of the X2D advantages I see are:

  1. Build plate heating looks more even.
  2. Smaller chamber is more energy efficient.

Would like to see more improvement on the X2D print quality (seems a little meh right now), but that’s probably something that better print settings will iron out over time. Again, teething pains.

Yeah, I know, everything about H2D sounds great, I am not into multi-color printing, so the H2C or the rumored X2C are not lucrative to me. Let me rethink, still have time till July 14th.

There is always the H2S if budget is limited and you are not going to print with multiple filaments at a time.

I still need the second nozzle for support materials, I do mostly functional parts(robotics). using PETG primarily till now, need to experiment with engineering materials.

I have since switched to PCTG in place of PETG and now experimenting with PAHT-CF.

I wait for about 6 months, even for a brand like Bambu Lab that has a good track record of making reliable printers. But everyone is different. Some buy right away while some wait longer.

Looking for help or wanting to get better picture, is super sketchy to you? There is absolutely nothing strange in creating an account to get help, especially on the printer manufacturer’s forum, where the largest number of its users you can find. That’s what forums are for. Mentionig “competitors” it’s just plain silly.

There were also a lot of posts with actual photos of the issues, why didn’t you mention them? Because it’s inconvenient and doesn’t fit the point you’re making?

As stated above, there was photos, you are simply ignoring this. Additionally, it’s funny to write about blind loyalty, not acknowledging the fact that someone else may have problems that are not caused by the famous “user error” and regularly reminding what a great machine it is. “Just ignore the noise” works both ways.

It works when it works. But still, there are many, many issues with feeding, cooling, top layer consistency, outer wall quality. And it’s nothing wrong to talk about them. What is wrong is denying all problems because “I don’t have them”, even suggesting a conspiracy by the competition.

Yeah, I would agree, there are many issues with the X2D and I would expect some with any new release. The good news is that most are not too bad and should get resolved over time as new firmware becomes available and the community finds their own solutions/improvements like the fix for the AMS 2 Pro on Makerword.

I’m all for talking, troubleshooting, and sharing problems to get to the bottom of any issues—anytime. I love troubleshooting; I’ve been doing it for a living for the last 20 years.

But when someone creates an account, comes here, and says, “Bambu sucks, I can’t print,” and then disappears instead of sharing a detailed description of the issue with photos and other information so we can all learn, help, or check whether we’re experiencing the same problem, that’s different.

In those cases, I’ll call them out every time and tell them to stop the drama. It’s a free country, and I can say what I feel. If they don’t want to share the details of the problem, that’s fine—open a ticket with Bambu and troubleshoot it directly. But don’t come here announcing that you’ll never use Bambu again, that you’re selling all your printers, and that you’re switching to another brand.

That’s great, but you’re still missing the point by lumping everyone together. Also, you are saying that it’s a free country and you can say what you feel. What is correct. But, in the same time, you are telling people to not to come here and say what they feel, even if they - in fact - bring pictures and discussing print settings. This is bordering on hypocrisy, i’m affraid.

There should be room for everything here. Yes, complaining without providing evidence and examples is worthless. Unfortunately, even when this things are provided, there is a strong resistance to taking this into account. “Because it works for me”, “because this is for sure user error”.

X2D is a new printer. It’s a printer that’s well-priced, but if you’re getting a higher-end model with features that exceed the price difference compared to the P2S, it’s understandable that savings had to be made somewhere. And the X2D seems a bit rushed, lacking software refinement and thorough testing. Ultimately, it’s a good machine, but I’m not going to claim it prints better than cheaper models. Because I own or have owned cheaper models, I’ve spent a lot of time benchmarking them. There is a topic about my concerns so feel free to look.

Agree, why does everything have to be big?

I want a top end Samsung Galaxy Ultra, but in the base model size…but no, gotta have the giant, non pocket size thing…

I bought the X2D thinking it would be good…
