So I am getting 2 conflicting answers from Makerworld,
My understand is that remixes cannot be an exclusive model, however for the Benchy contest we were told to upload them as orignals so the system would let us compete in the contest.
I have submitted a support ticket and they confirm that Benchy remixes cannot be exclusive, yet a model that was reported for not meeting the exclusive program requirements was rejected by the review team
So can we please have a clear ruling on this, because i donât want to turn around in a few weeks time when i do a withdrawal and it is rejected because of the Benchy Remix contest submission and I donât want to miss out on exclusive points.
I stupidly assumed that exclusive points would be possible for the Benchy competition because so many other participants are also exclusive. So I went to the start with 5 Benchy models and this morning I have to find out that 3 out of 5 have been removed from the programme and therefore all points are lost. But as I said, only 3 out of 5.
I donât understand it any more⌠There is also no information in the description of the competition.
Itâs fun, really motivating. I love starting the day like this. You couldnât change the points to regular points⌠Simply lovely.
That so weird, on one hand the Benchy is now public domain so yes anyone can use it but on the other hand it is a remix so it canât be exclusive. I decided to roll the dice and change to exclusive but if i canât get more than and copy and pasted answer from support with an official ruling iâd be happy
Hi,
Thanks for your inquiry on the subject.
For this particular contest, we ask our creators to upload the entries as âoriginalâ and credit our Benchy creators in the model description(sadly, not all participants are following our request on this).
Regarding the Exclusive Model program, weâd like to emphasize that many of our talented creators are using the original Benchy Model as inspiration for highly innovative and creative concepts. These adaptations often involve significant modifications, resulting in entirely new designs. Both we and the original creators appreciate such creativity, and we believe these models deserve to remain in the program due to their originality and transformative nature.
Here are a couple of examples for clarity.
However, for models that have only made minor or insignificant changes to the original design and have entered into the Exclusive Model program, we are going to remove them from the program if being reported and reviewed upon.
Thank you for your inquiry on this matter.
Let us know if you have any further questions.
I appreciate what your saying but this means its up to someones interpretation. The model you shared, except for the quadcopter and the sailing memories, I would argue arenât actually transformative, the benchies have just been scaled in size and havenât done anything to the model. This also sets precedent that a remix of any model is now eligible for the exclusive program as long as someone needs deems it too be transformative enough. There should be a clear cut line so it avoids any unplesantries.
I have made my entry an exclusive and you may or may not deem it transformative enough and there is no clear line for me to judge it on. I really think you should make a ruling one way or the other, its either all can be exclusive ot none can be exclusive.
I was a bit snarky in my last comment to MakerWorld because the communication just adds to the confusion. But I think there is a clear distinction to be made that is quite specific to the Benchy:
The Benchy has a CC0 license. In other words, it is public domain. You do not have to give attribution and you do therefore not have to disclose that it is a remix. Any design based on a CC0 licensed model can be uploaded with whatever license you want.
I think the most clear comparison is that the shape of the Benchy is now public domain. Anybody can use it and do with it what they want, just like the cube in TinkerCad.
It would have been much clearer to give this brief with the contest, instead of some workaround way to have a contest and now even allow remixes to be part of the Exclusive Program as long as they are âgoodâ enough
Even though itâs raining here today, my day has just been made!
Being mentioned here as a positive reference really means a lot to me â thank you so much!
I totally understand what youâre saying I often find myself in the same spot when creating different projects, always wondering if something is âexclusive enoughâ or not. But I definitely agree with the examples shown here as clear references
The Benchy Shipping Co. game is a great example of creative thinking and a beautifully structured presentation. Massive respect to the designer who came up with an entire board game𤯠Iâve tried something similar myself, and I know how much effort that takes!
The diorama is a great counterpart to my Benchy drone Iâd say both are fantastic examples of how to implement functional features in a creative way. And âSailing with Memoriesâ is, in my opinion, a perfect showcase for how to turn the Benchy into something more decorative while preserving its identity. Really awesome work! check out the details!
ASTDrones, thanks to your inquiry here in the forum, my model has now been âofficiallyâ acknowledged as exclusive and with that, youâve taken a huge weight off my shoulders! I just want to say thank you again for the time and effort you put into this. I really appreciate it!
And honestly, your own entry for the contest! I would personally consider that exclusive as well. Great work!
To clarify, this is not what we meant. Remixes are not allowed in the program. Given the contestâs goalsâand especially since Benchy is now a CC0-licensed modelâwe encourage creators to use it as inspiration to develop entirely new models, showcasing their own creativity and originality.
This is why we requested that submissions be uploaded as original works while still giving proper credit to the original creators. We expect entries to be fresh creations that draw inspiration from the original model rather than being direct modifications of it.
Weâd also like to emphasize that this is a unique situation, and our sole purpose is to honor a decade of this remarkable model. Like we stated in the contest description, this setting will be an exception for this contest only.
Hereâs my two cents: If one starts with the step file, then itâs a remix. A remix of a CC licensed model cannot have a Standard Digital File license, which is required to join the Exclusive Program that provides legal assistance for IP violations as part of the program benefit.
The two creators invited Makerworld creators to âremixâ so I would interpret that as their understanding as well.
ââŚimport it into your favorite CAD software, or use the classic STL, and remix it to bring your wildest ideas to life âŚâ
In addtion, making too many exceptions to the Exclusive Program adds to the confusion about what is required to join. Creators may simply enter their models into the program and if points are deducted later then ask for exceptions/special considerations, at least to retain the regular points. Nothing to lost.
Right, but the benchy isnât CC anymore, its public domain, zero rights reserved and everyone is free to use the model as they see fit even commercially without so much as attribution required
Absolutely nothing has been changed from the original Benchy model, only cats have been added on top. How is it possible that this model is part of the exclusive programme?
I have already reported it and was rejected. It would be great if someone could explain this to me. Because I obviously have difficulties understanding the explanation given by Bambu.
Many thanks for the kind words about the shipping game model. We tried to craft something that was unique for the contest, but reflected the types of games we love most.
I was watching your drone model GIF the other day on a loop because itâs such an awesome project with the rotating stand and watching the benchy fly around the room. Itâs both clever and hilarious, and just such a fun build.
Thereâs been so many creative and inspiring models in the contest, which has been really fun to watch!
Thanks! Iâve definitely had that GIF running on a loop too! totally with you on that Itâs just too funny watching that little thing dance around the room!
I can only speak from personal experience, but the way you presented your project really deserves a spot on a store shelf, seriously awesome work!
The work doesnât stop after creating the model, what comes next is often just as time-consuming, if not more!
I once tried to develop my own version of âRiskâ and had to put it on hold - it was just too much!
Technically it meets the requirements of being complex, the cats are decently modelled, the benchy being there doesnât exclude it because it public domain now
