Hello, I have a question. I would love to start designing my own stuff… do you have any ideas which software ist helpful and good to learn?
I dont want to have the classical CAD (like fusion or solidworks) I would prefer a more artistic / sculpturing software. Maybe even one for the ipad? Or one for windows?
Yeah, that’s clearly the best channel out there for CAD/design teachings imo.
I’m not really using Plasticity but I tried it with the tutorials of the L.E.A.D. channel and it gave me good results and was easy to learn. Surfacing features are easy to learn with that tool.
Only reason why I don’t actually use Plasticity is my lack in artistic design skills. I’m more of technical guy.
I recommend Blender. Yes, it’s complicated, but the advantage is that you don’t have to know everything. You don’t have to use everything. For modeling, you probably only need to understand two or three sections. Why Blender? Because there are several plugins available to prepare models for 3D printing, as well as numerous tutorials on YouTube.
Of course, there are many alternatives, but at some point you will want to print it out, and then it is advantageous to have a plugin that checks for errors to avoid the most common mistakes.
Believe me, everyone felt overwhelmed by Blender’s many features until they realized that you really only need a few of them for 3D printing or modeling. Above all, this is also very practical in everyday normal 3D printing, for example, if a figure does not fit on the print plate and you want to cut it. Unfortunately, this is very poorly supported in the slicer.
If you want transferrable real world skills, put on your patience pants and learn Blender. If you don’t care about that, there are much more simple tools, including those mentioned above.
My frustration with Blender is that their features change wildly inbetween versions and the internet is indexed with dozens of revisions of the same feature, so googling when stuck is always a nightmare. I’ve really learned to love its vertex editing though.
If you partner AI with blender it makes navigating the vastness of that software doable. And I agree, there is much more of an artistic feel to it and more organic features.
