I have the attached which I need to print. When I stand it upright the lower part prints great but the top wobbles, even if I slow things down as it gets higher. Printing on its side the finish is not great and even then it wobbles a bit nearer the top.
I did try modelling triangle shaped supports in place, but it was difficult because of the shape. Likewise I tried painting a few spots for support with mediocre results. Are they essentially my two options?
How do you usually print these types of pieces?
I cant share the file unfortunately, but its just a lid for a container.
I’ve used painted-in supports and had good results. It just blows up print time if you add a lot of them. I was printing a similar kind of plate type print that needed to be printed on edge. Overall it worked pretty well.
Not telling you anything you don’t already know since you mention painting supports. Maybe a couple of tiers? Might add a brim on the side that touches the build plate?
In your 3d authoring program, you could use the part to cut/boolean the needed shape out of the support object, push that face in a little too, to create a slight gap.
I think painting on supports is another good option because you can keep it small, just helping add some rigidity to some key areas.
I would paint small dots of support on opposite sides to stabilize the model. Tree Slim or Tree Hybrid usually works best. Set Support/object xy distance to a small value; 0.05 mm has worked for me, but you might be able to go lower without actually touching (and scarring) the object.
Supports cannot go past vertical. In that orientation, you can’t support both sides at the same height except near the angle.
Thanks, Ill try this first. My support xy distance was probably too big. If that doesn’t work Ill give @Josh-3D ‘s example a go. Side wings sticking out of the main support triangles might also help.
