Black spot on camera feed (photo included)

My new P2S Combo seems to have a dead pixel in the camera. I know it’s not dirt because I already tried cleaning the camera with a microfiber cloth, and there’s no crack or indentation so the lens is fine. It’s something inside the camera. I contacted Bambu Lab and they said they want a timelapse video? I’ve never used that feature. Anyone know why they would ask for that?

Looks like a speck of dirt to me. Dead pixels usually look different, sharper and smaller, usually white (but not always).

I don’t know about the P2S, but on my H2C the actual camera is behind a plastic window, inside the corner plastic housing. I could see some bit of junk getting behind there relatively easily. The static cling is strong up there too.

Maybe try hitting that area with some compressed air or a blower, if you have some handy, around any edge cracks you can find.

If I had to guess, support wants to see the clearest video/snapshots possible to help identify the source of the spot. Maybe to see if it moves with the bed… IDK… :grinning_face:

@MaxThreeD is 100% correct. That fuzzy image suggests a contaminant within the optical path. Best case, it is on the exterior lens. Start by cleaning the outer lens with a proper lens cloth or lint-free wipe.

If that does not resolve it, you have two options: replace the camera, or remove it and attempt a teardown. If you choose the latter, carefully disassemble the unit and use compressed air to blow out the lens cavity and, with extreme care, the image sensor.

The camera is essentially a bespoke webcam and disassembles much like any standard webcam. I have taken several apart for reuse in other projects, and the process is generally straightforward. This video shows how simple the construction typically is:

Side note: Little-known trick is that just about all laptops use standard USB camera modules internally. Before discarding an old laptop, remove the camera PCB and the wire connecting it to the motherboard. Solder on a USB connector and you effectively have a standalone USB powered camera. My friends all know to never toss their laptops but send them to me because I salvage the parts for projects exactly like this.

Guys I wish it was dirt but it’s not. I cleaned the lens several times. It just won’t go away.

I won’t attempt to disassemble or replace the camera myself. I want to record a timelapse as they requested since they said the warranty will cover this. So I enabled timelapse and recorded a 16 minute print and the timelapse video came out 3 seconds long only. I’ve never used timelapse before. Does it only work well on long prints? Is there a way to record a normal video? I bought a 64 GB SanDisk USB flash drive just for this so hopefully someone can help.

It might be dirt inside the lens, but its definitely dirt/debris, not dead pixels. Either case, bambu should be helping you replace the module cuz they cant expect you to unbond the lens and reglue it down lol

They are not talking about dirt or debris on the outside of the lens, which is the only thing you can wipe off. You mentioned you wipes it a few times but not internally.

It is being mentioned that there is dirt or debris behind that lens or within the other lenses of the camera. Cameras, even these little ones are made up of multiple layers of lenses. The debris is most likely with the camera lenses, not on the outside. It can be so small that you cannot see it with the naked eye from an outside visual look but enough to cause these blurred spots.

Certainly send BL what they requested as they have a reason for what they ask for and its part of their rca process.

Does the timelapse show the dirt spot? That’s all support wants to see.

If you have cleaned the lens, the dirt is inside the camera, either on the other side of the lens or on the sensor. A dead pixel would have sharp edges and be much smaller.

A timelapse is just a series of snapshots taken at widely spaced intervals, so being much shorter than the print time is to be expected.

You can record continuous videos from the Studio Device tab by activating Auto-record Monitoring.

Oh I see. Sorry everyone for misunderstanding. I thought you all meant dirt outside the lens. Didn’t expect dirt inside the lens. Here’s the timelapse video I took in case you’re interested. So it’s actually dirt and not a dead pixel? Watch Black spot P2S | Streamable

The factory that made the camera module made yours with a speck of dust in the lens by accident, and nobody/no automated processes caught it. such is life

Dead pixels show up as literal pixels stuck in a specific color, usually one-or-all-of R/G/B pinned to max or min. That speck occupies thousands of pixels, and camera optics says being out of focus and transparent, that it is very close to the lens/sensor. But in both cases, bambu should be arranging for some sort of replacement part so the taxonomy isnt super important

Dead pixels don’t blur very much. You’d see a pretty clear/sharp “punchout” where the dead pixel was. Depending on the nature of the defect, it could be black or white or any color in between. But it’ll usually be either black or white. But because a typical webcam is compressing its video, a single dead pixel can be really hard to see unless you use a uniform white or black target. In a real-life image, a few dead pixels will be all but invisible. And webcams (particularly really inexpensive ones that get built in to some other product) have an allowance for dead pixels, they can ship with a few as long as they’re not clustered together.

Dead pixels on a display are much easier to spot than dead pixels on a camera sensor.

The OP’s photo shows a very blurry blob and that eliminates dead pixels as the explanation.

Until then, did you know that the image our eyes produce and give to our brains to process also has a big dark spot in it? Way bigger than that one, all the time, and we still do just fine. Google punctum caecum. Brains are cool.
