I was going to print a BIQU BMCU-370 when I saw this on Makerworld…
BIQU are claiming that this is open source. A CC-BY-NC-SA is not open source! I understand that BIQU are selling these, so it would be reasonable that they include the NC license, but the problem is that they are claiming that it’s open source. Do any of you know any other options for the BMCU that are actually open source? I would also happily remodel the thing from scratch and share it under something like CC-BY or CC0.
First, it’s important to understand that open source isn’t directly comparable to a license. Open source is more of an umbrella term, while the Creative Commons Attribution defines what you’re allowed to do.
That isn’t a contradiction; it complements each other - they are two parallel concepts. Open source doesn’t have to be CC0, nor does it have to be AGPL, because “open source” is just an umbrella term.

There’s nothing stopping you from remodeling it, but you just can’t use it for commercial purposes - that’s the only restriction.
For example, many of my open-source projects used the same license because I didn’t want people to make money off them. That’s why CC BY-NC is so widely used: “Do whatever you want with it, but don’t make money off it!”

I might just get the parts and remodel it from scratch or make a different version, just for the fun of modelling.
EDIT: Technically it’s not defined as open source, it’s “source-available”, but who cares. I will just make a completely new model from scratch, because then it’s technically my work even if it’s based on the model. (if I am breaking any laws pls let me know)
