Both my MP-X1C's flipped out last week and behaving weird!

Mates, need your input, what is this?!?

About a week ago both my MP-X1C’s with AMS1’s (“My Precious - X1C’s” read it in your mind with Gollums voiceover) both flipped out and really had a never before experienced hizzy fit. They went ballistic!

Had precisely done the big Maintenance and cleaned them thoroughly, new nozzle assemblys with new silicon x-mas socks. Also additional stuff like new PTFE original tubing in both asf, really thorough and everything cleaned vacuumed, afterviped with ISO, lubed and the complete and utter thorough shabang!

Started them up and I heard through the apartment building as my newest chewed up my new doublesided golden textured plate, erratic lines!

Second had chucked all memory and said theres no chosen filament in the AMS. (And I had obviously set it with 4 new spools and none for the side 5th spool) But it had nothing, I set it again and it forgot the setting in a few minutes.
It says the cable connecting them is loose but I love these X1C’s so I have a full desk with various spares - changed cable right there and then…
Aight, Newest “precious” forgot everything again in a few minutes.

Did a full maintenance again, literally every step and even changed PTFE tubings, relubed, belt-tension and so forth in case something somehow pushed on something or whatever.

Then I did a complete Ammobox on each printer.

When I started the next print I heard a Scraping loud noise screeching through my apartment,
Precious Newer had scraped/jacked it’s spare dual gold textured plate feck!
Firstborn Precious had literally done nothing as it had forgotten what PetG or whatever could be in the AMS…

Both printers has been solid platinum reliable and I stand here in awe wondering what just happened?!?

(I am going now to replace the AMS cable to an extended since I have packs of these as spares… also I will crack the AMaSses up again and wipe down all connections with Liquimoly Electronic Cleaner and afterclean with 99,9% ISO.)

Why the holycow did Newest Precious suddenly start scratching goldplates to smithereens?
(I’ll complete this post with pictures later tonight, my G/F is locked in by the snowyroadscrapermachine, her Honda barely sticks out of the snowpile of heavy wet snow. sigh And as you can understand she thoroughly enjoys me “playing” with my beloved printers instead of the snow shovel.)

What is this, how can they start flipping out at the same time and I need your minds that are sharper than my mind in hope for your input/feedback mates.

All this has given me a migraine, it’s not happening since they are absoleted or something I hope?

There is something you have done in the process of doing all that maintenance work, the exact same way on both machines, and it was wrong so now they are both broken in the same way. Maybe you have misinterpreted a step in the instructions and while you think you did it right, you did not…

I doubt it’s a mechanical failure - cleaning/lubricating/tubing isn’t the problem.

Since the only electrical change you made is “new nozzle assemblys with new silicon X-mas socks”, this is where I’d look for the problem. Did you forget to plug something back in? Did you plug it in wrong? Did you break a connector in the process of disconnecting/reconnecting (a not so uncommon failure if you don’t know what you’re doing)?

It is possible that I made something wrong,
I do this full maintenance every 4th week with few exceptions
(Such as if I have been away and they briefly are unused, but I prolly have some sort of OCD since I tend to be overtly avid with maintenance and have stuff mint pristine status.)

If you are correct, as you very well may be, what is confusing if I made the same mistake in both is…
that they exhibit different issues,
Printer A/ chews golden textured plates
Printer B/ looses connection with the AMS

I am printing now, have not changed anything yet since they each throw the errors (A Chewed golden textured buildplate again, B continously loose connection with the AMS and forgets the preset filament types)
I have printed two smaller 3hrs prints as inrepeatedly twice on each A & B printer, and precisely now sending over/starting a larger 14hrs print on both, as in same prints in both simoultaneous.
Nothing changed and no complaints suddenly?

What could I have done so the A started chewing build plates randomly with a few normal prints between? I cant figure that one out. Honestly I cant figure out what I could have done different in the other printer that started forgetting preset filaments and loose connection either?
I will crack the AMS open and clean all connections with liquimoly electronic cleaner and afterclean with ISO, than changed to another connecting cord (have new extended in packaging)

I have some modest experience with electronics so I am very careful handling any and all electronics such as connections, motherboards/components take time to carefully disconnect connections to keep any chance of procedural damage away. (I dont know if it matters but I do have an degree in electronics and designed a lot of minutia back in the ABIT motherboard era, however thats way back and I might have gone a tad senile or something :slight_smile: But it certainly doesnt make me immune to master level fumbling, haha It only means I fail to find the culprits despite some serious wrestling with my precious X1C’s. My multimeter just loves spontaneous glitching, haha No, this time I’m in over my head and need the help.)

I did not realize the machines misbehaved in different ways. I take back the “you made the same mistake on both” comment. :slight_smile:

Every 4 weeks? That is a very aggressive preventative maintenance schedule. You only need to do PM based on print time. It’s really a function of the filament you use. ABS, for example, requires a much higher PM schedule than PLA. But I wouldn’t waste my time with anything more frequent than maybe 500 hours of print time (unless the printer complains or print quality noticeably degrades).

I would say that the connectors on the printer, for things like the extruder assembly, are not designed or intended for a high number of insert/removals. So depending on how many times you’ve unplugged and then replugged stuff, you might have caused a connection to start to get intermittent. Different connectors wearing out (or different pins on the same connector) might account for different behaviors between the machines. Intermittent connections can be effected by temperature, if the temperature now is different than when the machines were misbehaving it might be because of this factor.

What about the possibility of contamination of the cleaning fluids or lubricants, tools used, cloths (lint shedding?)

Recent software updates?

Any (especially new to you) unusual filament materials that could be causing some obscure contamination?

What about mains electricity variations, are they running off the same UPS or filtering hardware, any new equipment that could be putting electrical noise on the supply?

If you are close to an airport or military site it’s possible to have radio frequency interference (in the distant past I was told of a hospital suddenly suffering interference with many different medical electronics kit - turned out to be a new radar system at the nearby airport)

Might be worth posting detailed photos or videos of the critical parts in case someone familiar with the model can spot something that’s not what they’d expect.
