Given the larger volume H2 printers they are now producing, do Bambu Labs have any plans to release their proprietary filament (ideally Matte PLA) on 3kg spools? If so, when might these be available to order in Australia? We are a university print farm consuming 20-30 refills per fortnight. A 3kg option would help us cut down on the perpetual activity of re-loading empty 1kg spools with refills.

I doubt they will. That would be incompatible with all the AMS.

Bambu’s solution to this problem is the AMS - it has 4kg capacity and a higher margin on product

I wouldn’t want to discourage anyone from asking for anything, but I’d say the chance of Bambu offering their matte PLA in 3kg spools in the next 2 years is no better than 300 to 1, and that is even including some alternative timelines / transporter accident parallel dimensions where Dr Tao is a Ferengi.

We need this! Replacing my filament less would be cool. But the AMS could be a problem…

There are other filament manufacturers that also offer larger spools up to 10kg, what’s stopping you from buying from them?

Indeed. If I had to wait a named single specific prducer to make asa cf color I would die by old age (and without spools)

Sure, but for BambuLab, it is a reason not to sell 3kg spools. All the comments refer to that.
If it is about PLA matte, I’m 95% sure that is produced by Polymaker and identical to their Polyterra PLA.
At least in white, they are indistinguishable, while other brands all look a little bit different. Maybe they offer 3kg spools?
If you are using that much filament, It would certainly be a good idea to buy a few AMS if you don’t find 3kg spools.
Or rather, avoid it, if you don’t want the enhanced maintenance and fiddlyness
AMS motors overloading because a spool is 1mm larger inner diameter than bambu’s blessed ones is some BS lol. I like the AMS lite design, way more forgiving.

@Bullocks , Honestly I can’t follow you. I have two AMS gen1 running since 1,5 years and I had not a single issue yet. Are that your first hand experiences? From all the systems on the market for switching rolls automatically, I always heard that the BambuLab AMS is the most reliable.
Anyway, as nr 1 solution I would look for 3kg spools from a different supplier. If BambuLab filament is not disputable, then I would look into a few AMS to at least allow to switch rolls in bulk and let them run for longer in between.
Waiting for BambuLab to release bigger spools doesn’t make much sense in my opinion. It just won’t happen.
Yes, my experience is that with my P1S w/ classic AMS that it overloads the AMS assist motor about 2 times a week, causing a wasted print, usually when the spool is 100-80% full. With elegoo, esun, or iboss. The filament is wider on the reel than bambu’s vendor makes them, so the direction it pulls on the spool causes the rollers to bind. Fixes itself once its eaten the first quarter of the spool. Weights somewhat help.
Ok, each to their own, but that problem would be a non-issue for PhilJ. They want to use BambuLab filament and even when they would use any of the foreign brands that are known to work well, there is no issue to be expected.
By the way I have used many foreign brands, including Elegoo HF PETG and even though I didn’t like it at all, it also worked flawlessly in the AMS. Maybe there is something wonky with your AMS or your setup?
Yeah, it may be just my unit is gettin old and needs refurbish. For sale if interested =p I find AMS motor overloads happens when all of 1) using some specific brands (elegoo, esun, iboss) 2) spool is 75% full or more 3) during filament change process or at beginnning of prints, generally when it needs to spool the noodle all the way thru the PTFE. mercifully since its during filament changes, recovery sometimes works ok, but it is quite blah, never ever happens on AMS lite
