Can I really not use the AMS and the external spool in one print?

Hi everyone.

I am printing with the P1S (an early converted P1P, actually!) and using standard BBL PLA for all 5 colors.
I’m using the latest (as of writing) 2.5.0.66 BBS and printer firmware of 01.09.01.00. I am trying to print a 5 colour hue forge image and have added a pause to change to the last colour which feeds from the external spool, but I cannot get the final AMS colour to unload.

Am I being completely stupid here? Surely this is a simple thing to be able to do?

Now while these are a few years old, I am currently facing this issue. Can I seriously not unload an AMS when the printer is paused?

I have added the filament as the 5th colour in the BBS and added a pause at the correct layer. I cannot unload the filament by using either the BBS device page or the printer itself.

Trying not to be frustrated and annoyed about this as I realise it could be me being silly, but is the ‘swap the filament in the AMS’ approach suggested in the reddit post the only way to do this?

Has anyone advice?

The external spool does not have a motor

You need a motor to push and pull filament to and from the extruder’s mouth - it handles it from there, but something must load and unload. That’s your hands for external spool, and an AMS motor for AMS bays 1-4. I don’t know if BS can combine manual and automatic filament changing in one slice automatically and you may have to do it with raw gcode.

What i would do is set the last and first color the same (turn blue to white) and change the roll of white mid print from the AMS to blue.

Apologies if I was not clear. My intention was to manually feed the filament but I cannot get the last AMS filament to unload. It won’t do it automatically and I cannot control it from the Bamabu Studio or the printer itself. I cannot get to the point where I can manually feed the external filament.

Thanks for the answer. Yeah, this seems to be the only way. But I think its silly that Bambu Lab force us to do this ‘sleight of hand’ to make it work.

I think it would be a little harder to switch from the AMS to the external spool being that you have to disconnect the AMS (correct me if I’m wrong). But it is true that some extra options would be nice, for example printing multicolor without the AMS, that every time the printer needs to change the color to stop and unload the external spool once it detects a new spool continue with the print. I would be a lot of work but before I got my AMS I would have done that to experiment multicolor,

I have a multi-connection that allows me to have the AMS and external spool(s) attached and there would be no need to remove the ams feed tube to use external spools. Tbh, it’s not really been that useful. I thought this would be where it would come into its own, lol!
