I wanted to edit in a little more info and make some small corrections to a remix that used a model that was previously uploaded to Makerworld with a license that allowed remixing, but that model has been changed to exclusive. Now when I go to save my edits, it says remixes aren’t allowed.
I’m not actually changing anything in the design, and the remix is definitely allowed because of the license I downloaded the file under. This seems like a bit of an issue, and a fixable one since the system allowed me to remix it in the first place, meaning the license my remix already has is legitimate.
well the license was valid at the time you made the remix, which is no longer the case, so you can no longer continue making new remixes (this includes making changes to your first remix, as that would fall into a remix of a remix lol), but you can keep your original remix, as that was the one that was made under the previous license. If the license is now different, moving forward no additional changes are allowed, this is how it works
i’m sure the system doesn’t understand that you’re editing just text, it will think that you are updating the design itself (as you can add and remove STLs during that editing stage)
you can always raise a support ticket, but i’lm fairly sure you’ll get a response similar to mine, as that is just how licenses work
That’s absolutely incorrect. I know that this is how MakerWorld and BambuLab has this whole “exclusivity” madness set up right now but it is in violation of the original license. Once a creative commons is out there it is out there and you cannot limit the license afterwards:
You can share it however you please within the original license (also in its original form) and these rights can not be revoked afterwards. Therefore any model downloaded with this licence can be redistributed freely, even if the designer thinks they can change the license to make them some small change.
So not only is it legal to edit the remix, it is legal to remix the remix, remix the original model and even upload the original model. As long as you give proper credit and you do not use it commercially. That’s it.
that is incorrect, a designer has all rights to change the license, what it does not do is impact the past, but impacts the future, you can check it on the CC website where everything is more detailed
“So not only is it legal to edit the remix, it is legal to remix the remix, remix the original model and even upload the original model. As long as you give proper credit and you do not use it commercially. That’s it.”
that is not correct, again go read the licensing terms in the CC website
Which means I’m free to edit my remix all I want and even upload new remixes of the original because the old license applies to the file that I have on my computer.
I’m not really here to argue that point though, I can’t even edit the text which is pretty ridiculous.
@bovineblitz became the licensee when he downloaded the model originally and he may upload the original again with the original license, on any platform. The same goes for remixes etc. So I’m sorry, but MakerWorld has set up a system that is just in violation with the original terms. Yes, you might change the license, but it doesn’t really change much as you can read from the website you pointed out.
@bovineblitz by the license you are not required to use the remix “option” when uploading a remix. You just have to give appropriate attribution. So maybe you can untick the remix box when editing and put an attribution in the description with an explanation that the original model was originally CC and link to it
Yeah well it’s up to you really, I don’t do remixes so I don’t follow that too closely, however as a designer I think the wishes and intellectual property of the designer must be respected
That’s against the MW guidelines tho. So yes you will be compliant with the terms of the license but not with MW guidelines and they will probably remove your remix.
The thing with CC licences is that once licence changes (say from CC to standard) anybody who got the model before the change is still allowed to enjoy all freedoms granted by CC licence. This problem with not being able to edit remix is simply invalid implementation of enforcing licence change. I understand it can be hard to decide whether remix is allowed for the model, so disallowing creating new remixes of model that has currenty standard licence is ok, but at the same time editing remix should be allowed regardless of current licence since the remix was created when creating remixes was allowed therefore editing and updating it will always be allowed by CC licence.
I just ran into this myself and have an extra wrinkle to have the group consider. If made a remix of a popular model by adding additional functionality to it along with some design additions. The original model was CC BY SA (Creative Commons, attribution and share alike). My remix followed the license and also has the same license designation. I was planning on selling some of these at a craft fair or other places. Now the designer just changed the original to the standard license and made it exclusive. Can I still print my remix and sell it commercially? Can others print my remix and sell it?
Note you can also take the original, unmodified copy (or your remix) and upload it to any other site as well under the original license if you follow the terms.
