I bought some. It arrived in an unsealed open faced box. No plastic bag, no vacuum seal, no silica gel. No thank you.

BTW the spool is too large for the AMS and would need to be re-spooled.

I’ve bought it before. What I got was sealed. Amazon has a bad habit of reselling used items. It sounds like you might have got someone else’s return. I hope you complained to Amazon and got your money back. I get used stuff sold as new from Amazon all of the time. Their returns department is poorly trained.

The two things you need to do (along with the use of food grade filament), is to ensure you are using a stainless steel nozzle for printing, and after printing, to spray the finished item with limonene. Limonene, a natural derivative of citrus peel, will slightly melt and blend the print layers of the product to seal the micro-grooves that might otherwise trap bacteria and contaminents.

Why does the nozzle need to be stainless steel? None of the rest of the filament path is.

I just thought about this more, it’s even more absurd than was immediately obvious. Thinking you could replace the nozzle and magically this makes the rest of the printer “food safe” is just fairy unicorn magic fantasy la-la-la thinking.

What about the extruder gears which are slowly being ground up and mixed in with the filament? That actually gets deposited onto the filament and extruded along with it, unlike the nozzle. What about all of the lubricants in the filament path?

Why the passive-aggressive attitude? The reason behind the stainless steel nozzle is more to do with not using brass nozzles, which in use release metal particles, one of which being lead as it’s used in the creation of the alloy. The rest of the filament feed chain is at much less or no risk of contamination as only the printhead is exposed to high temperatures. If a person is wound up over printing food safe products, I would work on the assumption they’re also intelligent enough to know that everything else needs to be clean as well. But, as you likely already know, there are food grade lubricants as well. I use them in many of my kitchen appliances, such as grinders, mixers and extruders. They’re also used in all of the food production facilities in commercial operation.

Wouldn’t any container that has previously been used with food be equally susceptible to harbouring pathogens? I’m interested in this topic because I purchased a new Ninja Crerami Deluxe ice cream maker. It uses 700ml tubs with press-fit caps to store the ice cream mixture in the freezer until its time house it. I’m thinking of printing similar sized containers from PETG to store surplus mixture

Exactly. The same could be asked if people were polled to see how many use plastic cutting boards in their kitchen. Or plastic items of any sort in the kitchen. As soon as they’re put to use, scratches can and will occur. But, it’s a complete red herring concern. So long as everything is washed carefully using hot water and soap… anti-bacterial soap if a person is truly obsessed… you’re taking the steps necessary to prevent contamination. The key to safe use of plastics for food preparation is not to use them with hot food items (unless its a silicone item, which is designed for use in heated conditions). In other words, no microwaving or double boiler usage of regular plastics of the type we print with. Those scenarios of heat application would initiate leaching of chemicals into the food.

I just as a side note, without taking any responsibility for it, and honestly a topic where I usually just walk away and talk to someone else:

PETG and food — that’s something I personally avoid completely and always. The main reason is the splintering behavior.

Plastic fragments can actually be extremely dangerous. Metal can still be detected in sealed packages, but plastic splinters usually cannot. So any plastic — especially those that can break into splinters — is something I don’t touch at all, and I won’t work on the job either. There are people far more deeply involved in this topic than I will ever have time to be.

Of course, in principle it can still work — after all, all food originally comes from a farm or a field and needs to be cleaned from almost everything. So it really depends on how far you are in the food processing chain.

Another point is that plastic is not just plastic. That’s also the reason why toys are regularly pulled from the market. But proving the exact material composition and tracing issues can become extremely expensive, and the gaps where someone can slip through the system are quite large. And if they know it, they tend to do it more often, especially in areas where it is common.

Personally I prefer silicone. My simple test is acetone — if it doesn’t dissolve or react, it’s usually fine. If it does react, there’s probably some cheap filler material mixed in. Cheap blends like TPE or PVC tend to become sticky or start dissolving when exposed to acetone.

Some people actually use search functions — including Google — and creators can see from reaction patterns what users really consider relevant. This can go way back in time.

By the way, the same applies to 3D models: ratings are relative. What really matters is useful stuff — especially when it comes to getting into the search listings and, more importantly, becoming historically relevant in search - the rest is mostly just a matter of time.
