Change to left nozzle takes 3 tries, then homes

New X2D owner here. The nozzle change works well for me most of the time but I’m printing my first experimental filament mixing print and it’s behaving strangely.

Switching from the left nozzle to the right nozzle goes fine. Switching from the right back to the left causes it to try 3 times even though it succeeds on the first try, then it homes - all the while oozing filament all over. This leads to a big mess (take a look at my poor prime tower after only 18 layers/18 switchovers) and adds a lot of time to the print. This test has 150 layers, 150 nozzle changes.

It’s never behaved like this before. It’s like it’s stuck, trying 3 times. But it works first time, every time. And why does it always home afterward?

Anything I can do? Is this normal behaviour?

A wild guess is that the sliding part in the Dual Filament Guide jam, that and/or the lifting rail.

I believe the problem was a PTFE tube holder modification I did to avoid the tubes scraping against the underside of the glass top. The right nozzle tube was bent back pretty badly which pushed the right nozzle down a lot when the printer tried to switch and raised the nozzle. This morning it would only go halfway. I could do it manually with a bit of force, but the printer couldn’t. Went back to the stock tube holders and it works fine again, though the tubes drag against the underside of the glass as before.

The printer did complete the print last night though - took 4-1/2 hours but it did 150 nozzle changes. The prime tower and the whole printer was a complete mess but the prints came out nice. It almost made me believe this behaviour was on purpose to save the print and get the job done by making sure all oozed material was wiped against the prime tower. It even wiped the nozzle occasionally and introduced a vigourous shake back and forth 5 times over the priming tower to detach oozing filament.
