Changing filament while AMS printing from a different slot?

Hi there,

X1C and 2x AMS with a different colour in each slot.

Let’s say I am printing an object or objects in black and I realise that the spool will run out before the print finishes can I change one of the other spools to a second roll of black without pausing and have it swap over automatically?

And if I can does it matter which AMS unit I load the second roll of black filament into?

And to take it even further if I had a spool that only had a short length of filament left on it could I swap that into yet another slot on the AMS and then add a third black filament spool into yet another slot and have the AMS use that automatically as and when it runs out?

Or is that too much to ask and would I be best served by just pausing the print and replacing black with black in the same slot?

Thanks & kind regards,

Hi GlynH,

To my knowledge, the AMS will only update its spools when there is no filament on the the hub or the PTFE tube in the back of the X1C. I don’t have 2 AMS’ so I don’t know if the AMS that is not being used would update its spools (I assume it would). Once the printer stops for no filament, though, you can replace the filament that ran out inside the AMS, or externally if you’re using an external spool.

As far as I know, for example, if you have PLA Basic Black in AMS#1 that runs out, and you have a loaded roll of the same PLA Basic Black in AMS#2, if the refill option is active, it should pull from AMS#2 when the black runs out in AMS#1.
