I would ask Bambu, is it possible to add a nozzle cleaning step between changing them?
I’ll describe the current steps of printing two different filaments:
the printer is using the left nozzle
move back, (1)
stops for a few seconds
moves to the right side (2)
again stops for a few seconds
change nozzles
back to work with dirty one - you can see how bad looking the part is in the screenshort after this. (3)
I have the same problem, I would like to have the possibility to change how the nozzels are switched, when they wipe the silicon pad or when and where to switch nozzels directly for small features to save time and material
Then use a prime tower, and the problem will be solved.
In most cases, a prime tower is necessary when printing with multiple filaments. Simply cleaning isn’t enough to fix the pressure buildup in the nozzle, which needs time to restore after being idle.
It’s hilarious what people do sometimes to save a few grams of filament on not using wipe towers and then completely fail a print and waste all that filament on it…
There is an option in Bambu Studio to flush into infill or into support.
If you have enough infill volume, that might work ( but I never tested it), but flushing into support would not come to mind here, as it destabilizes your support and possibly causes a failure.
If my part would be so large that a prime tower doesn’t fit on the bed, I might consider to flush into the infill, as long as that is not critical for the strength of the part.
I can see no other reason to skip a prime tower, unless you are willing to take the risk of wasting all the filament.
I used to do that back when I was new to 3D printing — printing as fast as possible and trying to save every single gram of filament. Ironically, I always ended up wasting more filament on failed prints than I ever saved chasing that “super-optimized” zero-waste dream.
These days I’d rather waste a little on brims or support than lose an entire print halfway through. Same reason I sometimes use glue even when I could probably get away without it — better safe than scraping a 12-hour mess off the plate.
But this time the lovely bug in Bambu Lab Studio decided to help me waste a 14-hour print. That one wasn’t on me — that honor goes to the “good” developers at Bambu Lab who were probably busy adding features for the H2C and, as usual, managed to gift the rest of us a few fresh bugs.
I get the mindset though — it’s fun to be the one pushing limits, chasing zero waste and warp-speed printing… until reality (and physics) sends you the bill. I still like to experiment, but for parts I actually need or for pricey filaments, I stick with safe, proven profiles.
