Cleaning up top surface with engraved text

Trying to get rid of these small holes around the engraved text on my top surfaces. I’ve tried some different things (increasing font size/spacing, adding walls, changing infill percentage, ironing, slowing down top surface speed, using “detect thin walls”) and seen a lot of improvement. It looks like 2 walls with 100% infill, ironing, and detect thin walls has provided the best results. However, I still get a few of these little holes in the surface around the text. Any ideas for getting rid of them and just cleaning up top surface engraved text in general?

If I read your print correctly, I only see 4 layers. If this is true, then you’re expecting too much of the technology.

One way to eliminate surface holes is generally to increase the top number of layers. You could decrease the layer height to 0.08 which will also create more layers and possibly fix the issue since the head will be traveling 4X as much over the same spot. But this will be at the cost of speed.

Another option is to turn on ironing.

i have noticed empty spaces when using arachne lines sometimes. Ive learned to set the minimum arachne line to 75%. Classic uses gap infill for small areas like that. Just a thought. Probably wrong but it does seem like the majority of holes are at the end of lines that have a sharp angled tip.

There are 16 layers. The model is 1/8 inch (3.175 mm) and the layer height is 0.2 mm. I’ve currently got it set to 5 top layers. And the engraved text is 0.05 inches (1.27 mm). I have ironing on.

I can try increasing top layer count and decreasing layer height. I’ll see if that solves it.

Yeah I tried out arachne, but got worse results so I switched it back to classic. Maybe I need to lower the gap infill speed?

You could try to increase the wall/infill overlap setting in the strength tab it’s in the advanced part. You could also try adding an extra wall loop or two which may lessen the angles between the walls and the infill which might help.

Another option is to go yo preferences and turn on developer mode the in the quality tab under advanced up the top layer flow ratio by 0.01 and turn ironing on, this will make it over extrude a bit and iron it flat which can help with the holes between the paths. You may need to up this a little more than rod but watch out for too much build up on the nozzle.
