Clogging with 0.2 nozzles

When printing with a 0.2 mm nozzle, I keep getting an ”extrusion motor is overloaded” message even though the extrusion works just fine. If I hit the ”resume” button right after the message, the print head docks, poops and continues the printing.

The error message comes after 5 or 6 layers. I tried with the default 0.1 mm layer height and thought the clogging/extrusion resistance was due to some bed warping and hence the nozzle being too close to the print surface, I increased the layer height to 0.14 mm which was the maximum that the slicer allowed. Again, ”extrusion motor overload” but the nozzle is not clogged and extrudes just fine.

Never had any issues with a 0.4 mm nozzle, only with 0.2’s. I’m using a cool plate super tack.

Any idea what could cause this?

What filament are you printing with? It sounds like you could be getting heat creep in the nozzle. You could try open in the top of the printer during the print and see if that helps.

I use Bambu Lab filaments exclusively. This is a new issue; I’ve printed with 0.2 mm nozzles before without any issues. But I’ll try opening the lid and see what happens.

What kind of filament? PLA, PETG, ASA, TPU?

Ah, sorry. PLA matte and basic. Tried both with the same result.

It wasn’t heat creep. Tried to print with a brand new 0.2 mm nozzle and the filament got jammed in the extruder during the filament switch. It unloaded the old filament, fed the new filamet to the extruder and the extruder started just clicking.

Might have to open it and see what’s in there.

Update: it wasn’t the extruder. It was as good as new even after 950 hours of printing.

The issue seems to be with the nozzles themselves. Tried to print again with a different colour filament and the AMS wasn’t able to feed filament past the heat sink. Swapped a new nozzle and the feeding issue was gone.

0.2mm nozzles get extraordinarily low flow, due to physics, so they are very vulnerable to heat buildup. Check the nozzle you just replaced for bulged filament bits. All it takes is one little piece to deform above 2.00mm, some unlucky retract, and it can be stuck.

I’d strongly recommend a vented riser, it gets rid of heat buildup up near the toolhead area in a very important way - out of the machine
