“The CMF Phone 1 is a budget-friendly 5G Android smartphone by Nothing, priced at $199. It features a highly customizable modular design and is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 7300 chipset. The phone has a 6.67-inch FHD, 120Hz AMOLED display2. It is the first phone from Nothing’s CMF brand, which aims to deliver quality electronics at low prices1.”

To save anyone having to search like noob me.

This is very cool to see a product company recognise the power of customisation by their customers via 3D printing. Very excited to take part in this competition. Is there anymore of a brief for it?

For unknown reasons, this contest has been announced twice today.

Here is a link to the comments from the first announcement so they do not get lost.

I think we actually need all the STEP files of the exterior of the phone, as we don’t really know the dimensions of the fasteners. My guess is most of the designs will end up using the corner accessory screw thingy, and some others might require replacement screws for the back.

I’ll say the same i have said in the other topic.

So… a contest for a phone that only a handfull will have. Can’t wait to see the printed parts not being on the phone… Will it count as a sucessfull model? Will the part fit? Not a good contest at all, atleast for now. @MakerWorld should wait until more people have the phone (what i doubt since the cpu specs are “mehh”) and then and only then throw this contest around.

My 2 cents…

I agree not many people will have the phone, but the contest is definitely sponsored by the manufacturer, and waiting until a lot of people have it, when all the hype has died down, won’t work either.

Maybe they’ll release a STEP file to print a dummy where the accessories will fit and look lifelike, better than designs all by themselves, in any case, It’s up to the manufacturer to entice people into the contest .

I almost thought I’d been censored until I noticed the second “release”. It was an announcement of an announcement.

My gut tells me that the number of people buying a Bambu Lab printer who also know how to handle CAD and purchase a low-end $199 phone is rather low, isn’t it?

I thought the same, so I went hunting and then posted the link in case it was for suppression.

Yes there are STEP files of phone (rear case) to play with. Check it out on x.com

Yeah, saw that STEP file, it’s not very useful as someone else said since nearly no one will have the phone, that’s why I suggested they release the whole STEP files so the designers could print a dummy.

This phone will sell around 10k over two years.

Successful for a budget phone as there are thousands of them all competing for the low end Android market.

The problem is, 10k is nothing (unintended reference) in the grand scheme of worldwide annual mobile sales.

The percentage of those sold by the time the contest has finished will be around 1%.

Of those 100, how many also have a Bambu Lab printer, can design, does want to enter a contest, does find the time to make the entry…

Yes, that single owner wins as no one else had the phone and hopes their design would work despite never being able to confirm it.

I like it, there’s a different philosophy to this phone (a phone for tinkerers) and it matches 3D printing very well by encouraging creating mods for it. It’s also a nicely specced phone for the money and I think it will appeal to more over your average budget smartphone. That said it will be hard to theoretically design something for it without the actual phone or at least a life-like full 3d model te print so you can try it out. As we all know a design usually has multiple iterations due to things you only notice when using the actual design in practice. I’m hopeful this will come with the contest as well. A good prize pool for it would be the actual phone so that the winning designs can use it to improve and fine-tune their designs with the real thing.

I’m not so negative about this one and hopeful for more collabs like this one in the future. This kind of ‘tinkering encouraged’ mentality should be more of a standard over a exception.

uhhh I already have a phone…

If they manage that, good for them, I doubt the number will be that high after the returns come in.

I would love to be proven wrong though.

If they sell a million, it is still a rounding error in the scale of phones sold and even smaller for all phones currently in use.

This is not to besmirch them, my point is entirely about the hyper-focused nature of this contest where so few will have access to a physical device.

I am sure you spotted the subject of my concerns.

Am I missing something ? Is there no brief for the contest? I assume its to design accessories for the phone but it could be more specific ?

The phone has attachment points by design, my guess would be to design whatever you want so that it attaches to the phone and uses those or some other way that is in keeping with the design of the phone.

I see this as a joint marketing exercise between CMF and MW’s. I reckon if they can get some nice accessories from this, it’s a win for them to show the customizable aspect of the phone.

For creators, I think one will enter hoping to win one of the gift cards, not for volume downloads.

It would have been nice for either MW or CMF to improve the prizes. Perhaps throw some phones in or extra gift cards. Go big or go home
