Is there a way to import colored .step files into bambu studio? I know it’s possible to import colored .obj files and match the colors, but Solidworks cant export to .obj format. It can however export to .step AP214, which supports colors.
I’ve been making custom multicolor lables. Painting each one in Bambu studio is tedious. My method has been saving models as a colored .step and converting them to .obj online. This works most of the time, but sometimes details get lost when I slice the model, which doesn’t happen when I color in Bambu studio.
I’ve taken screenshots. The model is exactly the same. The “good” one is painted in Bambu studio, and the other is a .obj
STEP files do provide support for limited color. I just tested it out using Fusion360, SoldiWorks eDrawings, FreeCAD and OnShape. All support color data. However, upon importing the data into Orca(which BS on steroids) and Prusa Slicer and Creality Print(Reskinned Orca) and no surprise, none of them support color imports. I also tested it using OBJ format which definitely supports color and that also was ignored.
Since we know that color is preserved in the 3MF file, Bambu clearly stores color data in a non-standard way. I can’t say that I’m surprised, anything that smells like supporting a standard Bambu has shown they will only get by with the bare minimum and supporting color on import would weaken their hold on their walled garden so don’t hold your breath to see such a feature any time soon. But in fairness, nobody else does either so what incentive do they have to spend energy on something that won’t directly sell more printers or filament?
Try exporting directly as a 3mf, bambu recently tried to align their 3mf usage with the standard, color might work. Make sure to set “include appearances”.
Tried the plugin. It seems the problem lies in the .obj format itself. It could be that the label text is too small… its just weird that it works fine if I color it in Bambu studio…
Yeah… I tried tricking BS into thinking its looking at its own .3mf file by editing metadata… It sems that they store color in a completely different way, since it detects it as a BS file, but cant find color data… Slightly dissapointing outcome tbh xD
Not directly what you’re asking for but since its raised text you’re coloring, you can just add a color change at the layer the text starts instead of hand-painting every letter.
Right click the layer slider in the Preview tab at that layer hight, then select Change Filament. If its greyed out, make sure any painting on the model is removed.
Still manual for each of your labels, but hopefully much faster!
