Coming soon: New modular AMS Flipper system

Hi everyone,

After months of development and testing, I am very proud to show you the first working prototypes of my new project today: the Steibock Flipper System (SFS) for the Bambu Lab H2 series.

My goal was to develop a slim and material-efficient solution that allows the AMS to be effortlessly flipped back for maintenance. The biggest challenges – the safe handling of two fully loaded AMS units (approx. 15 kg) and a clean, kink-free routing of the cables and PTFE tubes during the flipping process – were successfully solved in this prototype without the need for complex additional parts.

The SFS is designed from the ground up as an open, modular system.
Here are the key features:

  • Three main setups: The system supports configurations for a single AMS 2 Pro, a Dual AMS 2 Pro, and the AMS 2 Pro + AMS HT combo.

  • Clever extensions: Side dovetail rails allow you to slide in various add-ons, e.g., side mounts for the AMS HT, adapters for Skadis and Multiboard, accessory boxes, etc.

  • Integrated cable and tube management: Various clips, guides, and cable winders allow for a clean routing of all cables and tubes. The system is also fully compatible with my collection of PTFE tubing adapters.

  • Integrable LED lighting: All standard LED strips between 8-12mm width can be integrated without soldering or gluing. This makes maintenance work with the printer turned off much easier.

  • Customizable front labels: The front labels can be designed and personalized with any design in the slicer. They are incredibly easy to swap out.

I still have to implement some minor improvements. The official launch of the system is planned for the first half of October.

Questions for the community:
What do you think of this concept?
What functions or features would be important to you in such a system?
I’m looking forward to your feedback!

Experienced beta testers wanted!
Before releasing the system, I want to ensure the mechanics work flawlessly not just on my end, but on other printers and with different filaments.

For this, I am looking for 3 to 4 experienced users.

Requirements: You should have the time and material (ideally PETG, ABS, or ASA for the frame parts) to print one of the configurations within the next 10 days. I need your honest, technical feedback on dimensional accuracy and mechanics, as well as your suggestions for improvement.

If you are interested in testing the SFS system, please send me a DM and include a quick note about your AMS setup and the material you would like to use.

Nice work designing this. Nice model.

I would have used 2020 aluminium, and I consider your solution better.

How about 2x AMS with a HT in the center? Not that I have use for that myself (yet).

I would go for that myself. Our two AMS’s are currently off to the side, and I have the HT perched backwards above the H2D on a support that allows me to remove the top cover without dislodging the HT so I can feed 85A TPU directly into the print head. For that I would tweak the flipper so that the top glass could be slipped out the front without tilting anything.

Hi, I‘ve got this request already from other users. So I will check if this works at a later time. But first I‘m focusing to release the Standard versions.

I would be very interested in beta testing this with you. I have a H2C, AMS2 Pro, AMS HT. And am reasonably experience and equipped to work on things. Did not have enough “level” to DM you. Might be too late. Let me know.

@Steibock_3D can your system work with the AMS PTFE guides that Bambi recommends for use with the Filament Track Switch?

This looks fantastic! I’ve been trying to find a good “flipper” type solution for the AMS 2 Pro and AMS HT combo but most I’ve seen required the HT to be mounted on the side or it’s more or less a stand without the flipper function. In your initial testing, does the riser part affect the chamber temperature or does it create a good enough seal? I’ve been printing more items in material like PC that requires the heated chamber.

Hi, thanks for your interest. I haven’t been able to test the temperature performance extensively yet, as I’m currently still very busy fine-tuning the parts and preparing the instructions.

I use the foam tape from Bambu Lab, which can be easily applied to the frame. According to the spec sheet, it should seal well. In my opinion, this should work even better than a 3D-printed TPU pad.
Or what is your opinion?

Hi, thank you very much for your offer. I actually found enough testers very quickly, so I don’t need any more.
I’d be happy to work with you another time, though, because I’m planning a few more additions and variations. Ok for you?

Hi, yes, the Flipper works with these PTFE guides, but they stick out quite far toward the back.
I personally use the FTS as well, but I’ve never used the PTFE guides. In my opinion, they don’t offer any advantage.
I’ve designed my own FTS mounts, which I naturally use as well (see link below). They fit the new Flipper very well, and the PTFE tubes are significantly shorter.
I also include some PTFE clips with the Flipper model. Depending on user requirements, I can add more of them.

For a carefully routed PTFE setup, they don’t provide much benefit. As soon as you have long PTFEs the weight will create excessive bend right at the back of the AMS; similarly, excessively short PTFEs could bend the PTFE at a sharp angle coming out of the AMS.

They basically enforce good PTFE practices, and for a lot of people who have posted about feed issues (both with and without the FTS) the guides make a difference.

Sounds great. Good luck with this project, it looks great.
