Constant Overloading of AMS

Is it possible to get replacement motors that have higher torque for the AMS and AMS2? I constantly get overload errors from the AMS and the newer AMS2. I have 3 printers at home and 3 at my office so an overload error on a 15 hour print is not convenient to fix when you’re 20 minutes away. I’ve found that simply telling the machine to it is fixed go again remotely will, in 1-3 attempts, get it going again and it may run flawless until finished or may jam again in 5 minutes. I’m just wondering if I can buy a motor with more than single billionth of a pound of torque capacity to remedy this issue. And the new AMS2 is no better than the old. Realistically, I noticed the the AMS1 was more reliable than the AMS2 has been. As the AMS1 aged it started to happen more often. I have 3 AMS2 models and 2 of them had to be replaced when new due to failures. All of them have suffered overloads from day one. Brand of filament doesn’t change anything. Bambu, Sunlu, Polymaker, etc etc they all do it.

Just to be clear, could there be a connection with your previous problem? Or does this affect all your machines?

As mentioned, just to clarify, are you referring to a specific printer - or all AMS regardless of the printer? Why I ask: Under certain circumstances, it may, but does not necessarily, also be due to the printer if the filament jams or problems with the filament buffer (or AMS Hub).

Good catch, but alas this effects all my machines. I was able to get that machine back to functional with a new extruder.

I have a H2D I bought in December that suffered this problem immediately out of the box. I have dealt with it though as I didn’t want to deal with the “buy another, send yours back” while they were out of stock. Some days it runs fine, other days it is a constant error. Could be the same roll of filament or a different roll. It really seems to me that the AMS motors are simply to weak. I recall reading they claimed the AMS2 had stronger motors. That is laughable at best. They almost seem to me to be weaker.

Nothing irritates you more than leaving the office on a 15 hour print expecting to have something ready to ship tomorrow only to have it error at 2 am and not finish. Throws a wrench in the whole works.

If you are getting overload errors on your AMS there could be several issues, such as a tangled filament. I recently had an issue with overload errors and while watching the AMS I noted that the wheels that the filament rolls sit on were dusty a wipe down with IPA and I have not had another issue during the last 150 hours.

I could perhaps see that on the old ones, but the brand new AMS2’s?
Of course, I’ve addressed all the simple fixes already. Should have said that. Cleaned rollers, disassembled units and made sure there wasn’t any broken filament, cleaned all the channels of “dust” from filament, changed PTFE tubes. I even took some new rubber rollers and installed them on the worst offending slots. It actually got worse. Went back to the old worn ones and the new worsened state reverted back to the old, not as bad version of the problem.

I will say that I do see a lot of filament “chewing” when it is happening. Little marks on the filament like the gear is pressing hard against it and creates almost like little teeth in it. But that happens on all of them, not just an old one. The newest AMS2 out of the box did it. It has gotten a little better with use, but it still happens about every other print or so.

I have a peice of filament (ABS-GF) that I snake up all the tubes and check for resistance or hangs. It surprises me how little it takes for filament to hang and almost always I didn’t cut something straight or seat a tube just right. I’ve learned if I treat it like I want to push TPU through it and try and reduce every bend and friction I dont have it happen anymore. That and making sure the things are level and the spool doesnt gradually slide to one side.

I’ve had a spool or two got cockeyed in the AMS after it pulled the tape too and if I didn’t have a camera pointed at them I would never know that was the issue after doing like you did and click “its fixed” without actually going to look first.

Torque alone probably won’t hack your problem out of existance - that error gets triggered based off current measuring from the expected electrical response of an unencumbered motor. You’d likely need to pair up some new AMS firmware. Bambu aint gonna make that easy for you.
