I agree with you. I don’t want to offend creators, but i want to express what i think. The first place was very complex but the dragon’s movements were orrible, the second place was a “remix” of something that already existed, while the 3rd place was a zero effort design. I spent many days for my project and tought my effort would have deserved at least to be on those 15, i think it looked better than many other useless designs that won some prices. I don’t think it was a fair contest, they should revise their judgement criteria. It seems like Makerworld is rewarding good looking photographs or renderings rather than models…
They are not false accusations , I would never do that, stop being so defensive, this is actually a big problem in my opinion community wide . The attached photos I found now on short notice . I don’t mean to offend anyone here, I taught I was clear on that, but the question is IF WE CAN REVERSE ENGINEER SOMETHING, SHOULD WE REALLY DO IT? And most of all claim we spent so much time developing. It’s logical we spend time adapting and improving , if case be. BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN ITS AN ORIGINAL IDEEA THAT SHOULD BE GRANTED A PRIZE . That alone is my problem. I really don’t care where everyone gets inspiration, I for one didn’t even participate in the calendar because I had nothing good to offer , but I did have an argument with a user, BIG GREEK I think who copied someone else’s design with minor improvements, only to find out that others person design was a 1/1 replica from AliExpress. The calendar with the circle thingies in the pictures below .
So again Benjamin, I honestly have better things to do than complain and explain and I don’t really care where anyone gets inspiration, my problem is with the judging criteria and the fact that that no explanatIon is given.
Sorry if I offended you , honestly it was not my intention to upset anyone.
You have bellow examples that accusations were not unfounded, do with them what you want. I only gave examples to prove my point, not to offend
@Wcad00 I do not deny that we have a lot of copies of existing stuff, and I try to report as much as I can. But you mixed it up and devalued the work of others.
If I look desktop organizers up, like yours - since you mentioned it. There are dozens available. Static, with connectors, with baseplates. Printables, Culd3d, Thingyverse, Thangs, etc … are full of it.
What is original now? What is the unique piece? Connector? Modules? Or is it simply repackaging existing ideas? Why does yours win over the bee organizer or Mario, or the other ones not awarded?
Don´t get me wrong, I am happy for you. Would I have chosen your
model? I don´t think so. There are more appealing and nicer-looking
organizers to me.
Would I have rooted for the model, that won the organizer contest?
No, but I think it´s a funny idea. I would never print it and have no
use for that. But that’s personal preference and nothing that makes me
mad. Can I understand the judges’ decision? Yes, I can, and can agree.
It´s still hard to differentiate and a hard task for the judges.
You will never please everyone.
But, what counts as innovation or original?
What is their own spin?
Let´s take the dragon scale, it is simply a random NASA Fabric model
with a scale slapped on top of it.
Is it enough?
Is there any effort in it?
What is the innovation, is original?
But what is the copy and what is the original? Hard to dig into.
Personal opinion: If it’s on ALI-Express the design has already
stolen by the vendor of the item.
Anyway, I think the original point to have some more information about why a model was chosen is still relevant and would be nice. Would help to make decisions understandable and relatable. I think we both can agree on that last part and should continue to discuss that part, to get a bit more transparency in the contests.
there are hundreds, not dozens, I know and I agree - some much nicer and some much better, I never claimed I revolutionised anything - my point with this project was to make it customisable beyond anything anything else out there, with LITTLE TO NO EFFORT. if you can find me something similar, please do, I didnt. as for originality I stated clearly in the description what I did and why. im not claiming anything that isn’t true
exactly - its personal preference - but the judges have to adhere to some universal criteria and I think we have a right to know the reason behind their decisions
Totally agree, but it was there before, and I honestly dont mind there are users that copy this, reverse engineering something has its own challenges and I think sometimes its much more work than just making an original. Should they win contests? I just cant agree with that.
all said before comes down to this
Personal opinion: If it’s on ALI-Express the design has already
stolen by the vendor of the item.
This is quite true. There’s knock-offs everywhere.
At least in the case of the 1st place winner and myself, yes the accusation is unfounded.
Here’s a side-by-side comparison of your example:

They are not direct copies of each other. They all use the same mechanism (sliding tiles) but that’s not what sets them apart. All three of them use a different construction method. All three of them have a different style - Scandanavian/Modern, 1970s, and Art Deco. And all three of them can trace their lineage back to the original made by Velos in 1925.
It’s like saying cars made by Chevrolet, Honda, and Kia are just knock offs of the first car made by Karl Benz. I just don’t agree that they’re the same.
That said, you do have a point about one of the Excellent Participation winners…
They’re the exact same right down to the little foot at the bottom. But guess what? Neither of them are the original. The original was actually made in 1998 by Gideon Dagan for the New York Museum of Modern Art
At the very least my perpetual calendar and the 1st place calendar didn’t copy something down to the last detail. It was our own takes based on an old concept.
I don’t mean to offend anyone here
Hey, it’s all good. Debate is fine. People all have different tastes. But please be careful about the validity of assumptions. Some might be true, some might not be. I am sorry that I sounded like a highly offended Valkeyrie clutching her pearls and swinging an axe at anyone who dared say I “just” copied something. I wasn’t all that angry, just…not liking how all my effort was casually dismissed.
But, can you blame me? If I’d said the same about your modular system, you’d be rightly upset, too. If I said that your model was nothing new because there are dozens of other modular desk organizer models, it would be highly unfair of me because it would invalidate all of your time and effort in creating something in your own style.
Lastly, I wasn’t being all passive aggresive when I congratulated you. From one designer to another, I know just how much effort goes into making something from scratch and your win is rightly deserved.
As far as the first place winner goes, I’m showing my age here, but it also isn’t an original concept. The original was made by Kikkerland and was sold on ThinkGeek. The grass is also not a new concept. The earliest example that I could find was by Superbeasti on Thingiverse.
Whether or not it should have won, I make no judgement either way. The grassy lawn charger cannot be purchased anymore and the 3d printable grass is one of those things that anybody could have come up with on their own. I say this because I also had 3d printed grass in my submission and came up with it separate from Superbeasti and the lawn charger.
maybe I didnt choose the best words, and again I’m not trying to offend anyone, but my point stands
its not even relevant to the case - for example. take yourself out of the equation, you are me, you didnt participate and you see for 1st and 3rd place two objects using the same system, the fact that they have different styles does not matter in this case, they are basically the same thing. WHAT ARE THE JUDGES REASONS FOR CHOOSING THEM? and be impartial here, because I am not attacking you, understand that, I am attacking the judging criteria that makes no sense to me in this case
as I said before, perhaps I did not choose the best words, but try to see my point beyond personal implication, because honestly it is not personal
I didnt even look this up, but you made my point here too, its not original, its a novelty item that will not withstand the test of long usage and time - SO WHY WAS IT CHOSEN TO WIN 1ST PLACE? again we come down to criteria that borders on judges personal preferences instead of a global view
I agree with this, and I am not trying to kick designers here, please understand this.
I dont know if it’s rightly deserved because they give no reason, why shouldn’t someone else have won, what made mine so special in the judges eyes. I am not above anyone else here, and some probably have problems with me winning second place, why shouldn’t they also get a reason? and that is the point of this discussion.
look at my description of the item, there are literally hundreds more beautiful than mine, or more functional, or more of anything, I know this, I didnt reinvent the wheel here, read the description and understand what was my point with this project - and its still irelevant, because we are not talking about designers, we are debating judging that for most, make no sense
I also have 2 entries, one usefull and the other was more decorative.
It’s hard to understanding an other culture and make someting they love.
And also some winners are doubtful why and how they are chosen. They are better designs in my opinion.
