Contest results of Maker´s Beginners Kit

What do you guys do with some comments like this then? I’m fairly new to MakerWorld but these kind of accusations and hate is what drives honest people away I feel like.

I report abuse, however, I would note, that these baseless claims are rarely removed by MW.

I have one myself which I am trying to get removed.

that’s where using the report function comes in handy

Report for abusive content + ban the user. Also - neither you nor anybody in the contest has any sway on the judges so “simply got him outvoted” is baseless accusation.

Regarding even the most hurtful comments on the internet I would share 2 pieces of wisdom, but those are laid with profanities and I’d rather keep the forum clean… One’s from comedy called “How High” and the other is quote from Mike Tyson… Basically: do not let that get to you, report + block and move on.

I guess I’m very susceptible to these kind of messages. Just rude and unnecessary. But you are right, I’ve blocked, reported and will ignore it until it hopefully disappears!

It’s a good thing the contest winners aren’t chosen by downloads or votes, because 90% of the contest entries I see are so distant from the point of the original prompt that they are useless to someone browsing the contest entries, but are often designed to promote quick impulse printing to farm for downloads/boosts (your coke can is not in this 90%, to be clear).

It helps to step back and look at the ‘point’ of the contest. BL isn’t giving away stuff for the warm fuzzy feelings, they are doing it as marketing to make more money. This isn’t unique, Prusa does exactly the same for Printables, and it’s not a new concept at all. Contests a) build up more models on MakerWorld so there’s more there for users, b) group things together so that someone with an interest in x can go find things about x, and c) link to the original prompt so that it can be used for connected purchases or event timing. The 0.2mm contest was used to drive sales of the 0.2mm nozzle, and promote the quality of BL printers with that nozzle. The holiday contests like xmas and halloween let BL use those images on instagram, organic posting about them on Reddit etc., to get people interested in the printers and stuff at the appropriate times of the year.

This tells you EXACTLY what criteria the judges are going to use when selecting a winner. They are looking for marketable cool things to print. Your coke can might have been skipped over because coke would get their images and such pulled for misusing their trademarks (they’re inconsistent with this, I guess they think Warner Bros - Harry Potter are less trigger-happy?). The 90% super-loose entries are allowed to enter the contest, because more models on makerworld means more models on makerworld, but they never had any chance of winning anything because they don’t serve the purpose BL had for the contest.

The things that won the beginner’s kit contest are the things BL most thinks will drive sales of the beginner’s kit, and get more people interested in the maker supply components in general - because once you print one thing with magnets, you’re gonna print 10 things with magnets, and if you get involved with screws, springs, electronics, etc., that’s a whole lot more for you to print and BL to sell you. They should be more upfront about this, because it helps people to know what is going to have a good chance of winning vs not.

The point of the year of the snake and valentine’s day stuff is obvious - make it instagrammable without needing context to know wtf it is and you have a better chance of winning. Fighter planes are rule of cool, interesting to see if they have a Chinese bias, might do well to model a J-20 instead of an F-35. Vaults need a cool looking mechanism with a gif to win. Shoe racks need to fit the right vibe - need to borrow a sneakerhead’s collection for the photos, or a bunch of ridiculously expensive heels or something. The train stuff needs the cool gifs too, and if it uses a bunch of maker’s supply stuff you have more of an edge there. Bonus points if it needs AMS, that helps BL sell printers.

To be completely honest I also thought you stole at least the idea. Then I checked both models and saw what you wrote about the other model, and that lowered my temperature.

Talking here out in the open about it helps a lot for users like me who see lots and lots of stealing.

And another confession: I saw your model while I was working on an oven (completely different to yours) and almost wanted to delete the whole thing. Haha. But I hope the honest designers will recognize each other over time.

Trust me, a lot of people like accusing people of stealing their models. I would ignore those hate comments because it can end in a pretty big argument if you try doing something 'bout it. Instead just report it.
